One thing that must be understood is that the films ran on different plots from the TV Series. As you say in the films Olive and Arthur have a child but not in the TV Series.I'd say the logical reason for this is that it would not have been practical having a child in the TV Series.Firstly, the child would not have been available for filming due to school attendance and also using children in TV is always hazardous and unpredictable so a lot of re-takes and editing would hae been needed losing precious and expensive reels of video tape.

As for Arthur,he left the Series at the end of Series 6 but my guess is that after a break he came back over a year later for one last hurrah for the finale of the wonderful On The Buses story. As the films storyline didn't mention a marriage break-up it got away with it.

I think the scripts for the three films were written during the series - in the series, Arthur and Olive not only didn't have kids - but they got divorced - in the films, Arthur got made redundant and they had a son.

I think they did that with a lot of films based around TV series - the film was made after the series finished - or sometimes during its run - but the story took place at some point within the series - but had no impact on the series itself. The films were often, if anything, just another episode of the series, but with a longer plot.
