Blakey Inconsistent?

I used to like it when he occasionally called one of the lads by their first name, or "mate", even when he had just bollocked them. Didn't they try to depict him as a heartless monster though? Little touches like that gave him a sort of fatherly air towards the guys.

Go see. He was still in his 30's when the series first began.

He was still in his 30s when it ended (still 36/37 in the last film), 33-35 in the series 3-5 peak of success. Reg Varney around his mid 50s (Doris Hare only 11 years older!), and Bob Grant in his late 30s. It all worked somehow!

It works remarkably well.

According to IMDb, these are the cast's birthdates:

Doris Hare, March 1, 1905
Reg Varney, July 11, 1916
Stephen Lewis, December 17, 1926
Michael Robbins, November 14, 1930
Bob Grant, April 14, 1932
Anna Karen, September 19, 1936

So Anna Karen was the youngest cast member and Stephen Lewis was the third-eldest.

I'm an American and I saw 12 episodes on two VHS sets made available in America a few years back. I've since bought the complete series (and one of the movies) and am watching them now.

With the 12 eps, I did pick up on a hint of comaraderie with Blakey and Butler once or twice, mainly in a canteen scene and I thought it was a bit of development on the characters.

I've noticed with the first season, Jack and Blakey were probably background characters and they developed into regulars with the second season.

With impending cast changes, such as Arthur and Jack leaving, the characters are clearly changing. I've read Blakey boards with Jack's mum and Olive in the end. I was rather looking forward to those eps, but I'm suspecting they are going to be below par. Hope Im disappointed tho!
