was blakey's moustache real?

to me it looks fake . to me it was used as a metaphorical symbol of blakey's fascist dictatorial character.

Also it was sad reading in wikipedia about Bob Grant-what happened to him later on in his life - I read he attempted suicide twice before he killed himself .

The shows were brilliantly written and acted that has stood the test of time (from the episodes I've seen.I've only seen like 10 episodes of the show myself).

And those double decker buses are great.I wish I had one of them. Not being British I was wondering are they still used today in London/UK?

reply

They recently took the last one out of service in London. They still have double deckers there and all over the UK, but not like the ones in On The Buses. The ones in use now are totally enclosed and usually with one door at the front. Some variations have another door in the middle, but the open entrance/exit at the back is now dead :(

There are some open platfrom double decker buses, Routemasters, still used on heritage routes through the centre of the capital past the famous landmarks. These are scheduled normal bus services but shorter duplicate versions of the number 9 and 15 routes and use nothing but Routemasters.

Although these buses are operated under contract to TfL, and accept standard Travelcards, Oystercards or cash fares, they are not considered part of the regular Tfl bus network, and only operate for a limited time during the day duplicating short sections of two regular London bus routes. The Heritage routes operate around 10 buses each[20], with 5 each in reserve.

Heritage route 9: Royal Albert Hall — Hyde Park Corner — Piccadilly Circus — Trafalgar Square — Strand — Aldwych.
Heritage route 15: Trafalgar Square — Strand — Aldwych — Fleet Street — Cannon Street — Monument — Tower Hill.

From January 1st 2017 it will no longer be legal to operate a double decker that is not fully accessible by a person in a wheelchair. Routemaster buses will by then have been out of production for forty-nine years.

the buses in the series are Bristol FLFs.
They had generally disappeared from normal service in the UK by 1984.
Although Stagecoach used a few on services around Perth until about 1990, and then on schools duties only until 1992.
Bristol Cityline kept one on and used it on m-f peak duties until 1993.
Southern Vectis on the isle of Wight kept one on which was used as part of their heritage fleet and was used on an all day diagram m-f until 1996.
