Sexy Olive.
Does anyone agree with me, that Olive WASN'T that ugly? In certain episodes when she wearing her frilly nighty, and shows a bit of leg, she's actually quite attractive.
Yes I am serious.

Let me guess your key board has little bumps on it right?
shareDidn't Anna Karen start out as an 'exotic dancer' ? My dad always claimed that she used to be a bit of 'a looker' but I only ever saw her in roles that made her appear less than attractive.

I am being serious. No bumps on me keyboard either (L.O.L.). I wouldn't be surprised if Anna Karen were an exotic dancer in a previous life. She had the legs for it. Anyway, so-called ugly woman are supposed to be more...'giving' in the bedroom. I wouldn't know. You tell me.
shareHey to each his own enjoy :-))
shareAnna Karen was - still is - very attractive. She got typecast playing frumps - but that's all part of being an actress.
shareI am not a superficial person who goes solely for looks, heck, I am an ugly sod myself- but try as I might I really cant find Olive attractive in any way. perhaps its just the way she was made to look
shareAnna Karen was indeed an exotic dancer in the early 1960's.Make-up and wardrobe artists done a great job in On The Buses to make her look very dowdy and daft but go to www.onthebusesthewebsite.com and go to the Scrap Book section and you will see Anna Karen in her exotic dancer pose and you'll see how attractive she was.

That link is dead!
shareI've researched this on IMDB and that appears to be a different woman, naseby. Anna Karen Morrow born in 1917. "Sexy Olive" Anna Karen was married to a British comedian called Terry Duggan who has just died on the 1st May. Look them up on IMDB and compare their filmographies, it's all seperate.
shareThanks Pokerluva, I was wrong - think it was some kind of wishful thinking, I mean amazing but she'd appeared in Marcus Welby MD in the 'states - don't know how old you are or familiar with it, but that was an American TV series and I believe, according to the 'OTB' website she received some gongs for it. Ta-ra, pal!
shareLOL I don't think they seriously intended Olive to be sexy but I agree some women who wear glasses do have quirky kind of appeal.Olive never wears any makeup so the producers obviously didn't even attempt to sex her up.
shareI remember seeing Anna Karen in another program (Chat show type program) at the time "On the buses" was being shown...
She appeared with a decent hair cut and without the milk bottle glasses and she looked a lot different to Olive...
Much of the "Ugliness" of the Olive character was derived from the crappy glasses, crappy hair style, old ladies clothing, special make up to make her face look fatter and quite a bit of padding to make her look fatter than she really was...
Without all that, at the time, Anna Karen was quite a looker...
Well you be the judge:

Heh heh!
I think that's a tad unfair, to find such unflattering pics. Look at this one here:

for example. Anna Karen was an exotic dancer during the '60s I believe, and she was quite sexy. I know, I've seen the pics of her then.
During the early 70s, when OTB was running and really popular, I remember the Sunday tabloids used to have spreads showing Anna Karen as she really looked. When glammed up she was indeed quite attractive and had a nice figure (especially good legs IIRC). There was a scene in the spin-off film Holiday OTB showing her by a swimming pool wearing a skimpy bikini and, as much as the script required them to tease her mercilessly as per usual, it was so obvious that without the padding and grotty old-lady crimplene dresses, Olive was no fatty. You could see she'd had a big lunch and was trying to push her stomach out as well as move around all slouchy but it made the jokes seem really forced to see her real figure. She would have been in her mid-30s at the time too.
Its a tribute to what a good actress she is that she could transformed herself so thoroughly - it takes a lot of skill with posture and movement to really make such a character so believable frumpy. Her voice is naturally a South African accent which, if you are familiar with it, you can very occasionally hear come through when she wails and screeches as Olive cops it once again...
I always thought Michael Robbins was really handsome (despite the raidly receding hairline making him look older and frumpier too) but it used to puzzle me no end that that middle-age grotesque doing the conducting and that mid-50s diddyman doing the driving out to the Cemetary Gates were so widly popular with the 'birds.'
When morning comes twice a day or not at all

Anna was born in SA. Back then - and this is nearly 40-odd years ago - you could occasionally hear a phrase from her (as shreiking Olive) that had an SA twang to it (especially if you are familiar with the accent).
What's the point in denying someone's experience with nothing but your own?
When morning comes twice a day or not at all
I'm not denying anybodys expirience. I am just saying when I met her (and worked with her) there was no hint of a south african accent.
shareRegarding Olive being a frump, she was, Anna Karen however was not.
She was pretty glamerous.
Makeup and trickery made her look different.
However had they cast an actress who was really like Olive was it would have been rather difficult to say the kinds of things that they did, of course it was the 70's so being PC wasn't so important, but nevertheless I doubt they'd really have got someone who was really like Olive (looks etc) to do it, quite simply it would have been wrong.
