He didn't have much of a storyline

Agreed. Not really sure why he was introduced as the opening character, unless he did, and it was cut or dropped.

Maybe his parents pulled him out of the school, and transferred him to a day one near his home

I could be very wrong, but I think that he goes on to appear in the kitchen scene, is assaulted by the chaplain and is glimpsed as one of the boys shooting back at Mick, so arguably he is a counterpoint to Mick and his friends' passage through the school.
