My parents lived in a cabin in the middle of the desert for nearly thirty years. Not a tree for twenty miles. Their only source of heat was a Franklin stove. They gathered dried wood from creosote bushes, juniper bushes, and other woody shrubs in the vicinity. You don't need a forest to have firewood.
