State Contest Winners?

Just curious if anyone knows about the "State Contest Winners" listed (several U.S. States are listed, with the name of a girl under the State's name) at the end of the movie, in the ending credits?
I assume, maybe some contest before the movie was released? Wonder if the "winners" were in the movie??
Anyone?

I just wondered what I missed also. Just watched this on DVR and wondered who and when they were on screen.

Over at the TCM website http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/95524/Where-Angels-Go-Trouble-Follows-/ user-reviews.html, somebody named Cynthia posted:

"When I saw this movie in the 60s, they reached California and the rally. The movie didn't just cut off after the cowboy and Indian episode and have a voiceover round up by Mother Superior. Even the credits on the edited version still show the contestants at the rally from each state. What gives?"

I'm not 100% sure, but there was a YouTube video showing some filming taken during the production of the movie. It also had newspaper clippings of the state contests, and apparently several girls were "state winners". My guess is these girls rounded out the student roles.

I've wondered about this since I first saw the movie in the seventies. I finally know the answer and am glad to share it.

It turns out Columbia Pictures had a contest to pick 12 girls for the film. The twelve who won were placed in the cast among Susan St. James, Barbara Hunter, Hilarie Thompson and the others. Their credits at the end of the film are listed as State Contest Winners.

It's an odd way to give these girls credit. Because it has confused me for the past 35 years!! I love the movie and have seen the end credits a dozen times. Now I know what it means.
