How successful was this movie in April 1968?
Anyone know how well or how poorly this movie fared at the American box office in April 1968? It was released that month. I suspect it didn't do well. The premiere took place on April 10, 1968, only six days after the assassination of Martin Luther King.
The arson and looting in Washington, DC and other American cities (lasting for many days in response to King's assassination) meant that white people who enjoyed watching this movie in cinemas had to be careful which friends they discussed it with. You might see one or two African American background extra actors in crowd scenes, but that's it. African Americans weren't impressed by the song that permeates the entire soundtrack.
I don't doubt that some newspaper critics liked the movie, but during the 1960s they liked a lot of movies that turned out to be flops.
