Questions About The Cemetery Scenes? (CONTAINS SPOILERS)

I just saw this film and was blown away by its impact and storyline! I do have a question. What was the significance of the cemetery scene in the beginning of the movie? I had trouble following the transfer of the money from the bank heist to this location. We know that Tommy was the mastermind behind the operation, but was their a specific marker or location for where the money was always to be placed? Originally, I thought the assumption that Tommy's wife was deceased. (Doesn't he say this when he brings Vickie to his home?) I don't believe Tommy was in it for the money. He was thrilled by the chaos and excitement of always being several steps ahead of the law. (Well, until he meets Vickie and they fall in love.) But why the cemetery to deposit and pick up the money?

I saw in on Channel 13 last night..it was great. I do recall seeing it when I was much younger and didn't appreciate the style nor storyline..but Faye Dunaway and Steve McQueen were pretty HOT.
