"Wall to wall carpeting." I assumed this was code for Dunaway's character demonstrating that she was able to plant spies (and by implication listening devices) inside Crown's house.

There, daddy, do I get a gold star?

Crown had an historic house (150 years old, according to him). It is very classically decorated, and wall-to-wall carpeting would have been completely out of place in such a house, where the floors themselves are an attractive architectural feature.

It was Vicki's little joke to send in her operatives to search his house on the pretext of measuring the floors for wall-to-wall carpeting.

I took it to be a mistake Vicki had made, sending people to supposedly measure for wall-to-wall carpeting in an old property. She only realised her mistake when she went to Tommy's house with him.
