What I particularly remember 40 years on......
What do I remember of The Thomas Crown Affair after 40 years later?
Apart from remembering that it was an enjoyable experience? Well there were three scenes that I recall.
1. An early scene in the movie where we see Crown overseeing the disposal of a building he owns. When the documents are signed the buyers say something like: -
“Well, I guess we bought ourselves a building.” To which Crown responds:
“You paid too much!” leaving the new owners feeling very flat.
2. The second scene is where we see Irwin’s wife emptying kitchen waste on to a newspaper which carries the bold advertisement, “Be a fink for $25,000.” Very graphic.
3. The very sharp scene where Crown slips out of his prestigious apartment by climbing down to street level and silently walking up behind a cop with a pleasant “Good Evening” and coshing him at the same moment, leaving the victim out cold on the ground.
Oh yes, and Irwin being held up by the Egg Man vehicle - that makes four.....
I suspect this movie fell out of favour in political circles because it showed a cold criminal getting away with very serious crimes. Levels of youth crime were increasing. This movie carried the wrong political message.
Oh yes, and that crazy comment by the janitor who was swabbing down the marble flooring that had been stained by the red smoke bombs thrown by the criminals – the last of the bank’s problems………
