Why is the other girl introduced?

As opposed to the remake, the dark-haired girl in the original (Astrid Heeren?) doesn't seem to have any purpose for the story. Dunawaye does read the message about her that the detective gives to her, but she doesn't really seem to care. Was there something edited out, or am I missing something?

Watch closely, she cares and gets jealous ( Vikki lights up a smoke and than later questions Crown a the beach regarding her)

She was mainly just used a jealousy tool by Crown way of telling Vicki he was not falling for her and that he had options.

Remember this whole movie really is just one long chess match between Crown and Vikki.

"This picture of Al Dutcher bothers me."

I think it was a subtle hint that Crown was not going to fall for Vicki. It would have been interesting to have her more involved, maybe at the end.

Two reasons I can think of;

1) It was a challange to Mr.Crown, Vikki is a highly intelligent woman and Crown wanted to play...'Do you play?'

2) Although Crowns girlfirend is arguably more physically attractive (I thought so), Vikki and Crown is a obvious better match. Crown knew this and even said it himself in the film 'Were a pair you and me'

"You sent us to guard the wrong man Mr. Chalmers."

When Vicki questions him about it on the beach, he says something to the effect of (and if anyone has the exact quote please chime in)..."She was to make you see inside yourself." (In other words, to see her true feelings, as a woman?) He knew Vicki would find out, so he did it on purpose...another chess move. BTW, after he makes that statement, she smiles, and they go off riding into the sunset, as I remember, in that scene.

That's pretty much the reason the girl was there.

Vicki reacts precisely as a woman in her position always does when real competition emerges - figurative fangs ready, claws bared.
