Why did the Erwin's wife Rat him out?
I missed part of this movie...but why does the Erwin's wife call and rat him out to the insurance/police?

shareBecause she was a nagging Bitch!
shareThat part always bothered me. Because it wasn't really explored. She seemed un happy with her life and Irwin obviously didn't tell her that he had $50,000. Because I don't think she would've told if she knew she was getting half the money that she (irwin) already had. I hope Irwin hid the money somewhere.
Dear Vorenus, I don't **** your wife.

That's for damn sure.
shareAccording to the Trivia section here (or was it Wikipedia? I can't remember), there was an initial 4hour "rough cut" of the movie shown to the composer before music was scored for it. It's possible that scenes that developed the relationship between he and his wife were originally shot, but later cut.
Either way, I think from the short interaction we do see of them at home indicates there was discord between them.
Probably because she was thinking of leaving him and figured she'd go faster and last longer if she had some $$$ of her own. There doesn't seem to be much love lost between them.
shareRemember how the police kidnapped their son in order to get him to talk? I'm sure the wife took a dim view of that outcome of her husband's role in the robbery.

Those weren't cops, those were Vicki's insurance guys pretending to be cops.

If she hadn't called then they wouldn't have known to kidnap her son.
Now, if he had given her half of the money ($25,000) would she have ratted him out for another $25,000?
Promise me, no matter how hopeless things get, keep on trying, OK? Keep coming chin-up, OK?
She was an irritating, suburban, unhappy hausfrau who hates her life, her husband, her choices, and her kid. She's the opposite of Vicky's freedom and élan. She turns her husband in, 'finks' on him for money, as does Vicky in the end.
-- Ew lover, you gonna make me clutch my pearls --
She was a bitter, frustrated and mercenary woman who thought more about money than her husband. Remember how she nagged Irwin to write a cheque (all right "check") for Mother?
