But of course! Now that America and Africa are so important to the Church it would be great to have a Pope from either the New World or from Africa.
When JPII made his first pilgrimage to America the Puerto Rican reporters describing the event were so nervous that they committed several on the air bloopers. The funniest one was when one tried to describe JPII as THE FIRST NON-ITALIAN CATHOLIC POPE TO VISIT AMERICA, but he spoke so hastily that it came out as THE FIRST NON-CATHOLIC POPE TO VISIT AMERICA.
CATHOLIC Pope? What other Popes are there?
God is subtle, but He is not malicious. (Albert Einstein)
Not the new world but Africa yes, they have produced great priests.
shareActually I would think one of the cable networks (maybe Retro, TMC or AMC) would have picked it up this month since it is back in topical interest.
In fact, in SOTFM, Pope Kiril actually "threatens" to resign/abdicate (if the cardinals do not go along with his plan), which in 1968 was even more unthinkable than a non-Italian pope.

I certainly think it's time for this film to be shown to a new audience. Dated, yes. Simplistic, yes. But it holds up rather well as an "inside the Vatican" story. And a surprising number of the events covered fictionally in the novel and movie have come to pass, perhaps with more on the way.
The last resort of one who cannot think is to argue that another cannot feel.
From your mouth to TCM's ears.
TCM played it last night. No idea if it is going back in their semi-regular rotation, but it would make sense given the "topical" nature of the subject matter.

Pope Francis seems to have much in common with Pope Kiril.
Interesting that Kiril kept his Christian name when he became Pope. Long time since any Pope did that.
