How brilliant was he? Sadly, never seen or appreciated enough while alive, though I know he was notoriously difficult. Still, some actors are worth it and he was never anything less than compelling and intelligent. Even the scene where he collapses - you see his pale skin turn red as if he's in actual distress. Great actor!

I agree, even though I thought Quinn was magnificent in this, one of his most thoughtful and subtle performances. Very few actors could outshine Werner, though!
shareIn this age of movie channels one is able to reacquaint oneself with serious films of the 1960s (and see them again and again, and in HD), and I find that Oskar Werner is in three of my newly-rediscovered favourites: Shoes, The Spy Who Came In From the Cold and Fahrenheit 451.
