Movie Monster Award goes to… Guy Woodhouse

The most chilling character is Guy. Instantly agrees to pimp his wife out to Satan with a date rape drug and have her birth the antichrist… in exchange for worldly success. This is after secretly blinding a friend permanently to get an acting gig. All the while, he plays the upbeat quippy hubby with a golden smile and a twinkle in his eye.

🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮

I know it’s all devious feminist propaganda by feminazi author Ira Levin trying to sow mistrust in marriage, but it’s done so well, and Polanski has made an 8-decade career out of showing how evil manifests in the real world - often hiding behind the smiling faces of everyday people.

Polanski, Levin and Cassavetes created one of cinemas most terrifying movie monsters with Guy Woodhouse.

Well said. I initially thought that Woodhouse probably was a part of their coven from the start, but after reading your comment, I think you're right. He just became enamored with the older couple and their influence and realized that they could make all his dreams come true.

Initially Guy really doesn’t want to have dinner at the Castevets’, then you see the cigar smoke emanating from his private conversation with Roman, and after that he’s obsessed with them.

During that conversation Roman seduces Guy into the cult by promising him the part in the play he wanted… by permanently blinding the other actor. When Guy gets the telephone call confirming that it ‘worked’ he goes for a walk. He's actually heading over to the Castevets’ to confirm that he’s ‘in’ and will feed Rosemary that date rape drug so that she can be raped by Satan.

Rewatching the film, you see lots of details that reveal how vile Guy is. When Hutch calls Rosemary to arrange a meeting where he can warn her about what’s going on, Guy goes to get ‘ice cream’, but you hear the Castevets’ doorbell. Instead he secretly went over to tell them what’s going on, and sure enough Hutch immediately falls into a coma for months, and eventually dies.

Hutch was a friend of Guy’s, but he’s happy to maim and kill friends, and have his wife raped, for worldly success.

The film is so haunting because it leaves you to connect the dots in your imagination, and that’s when you realise how stomach-churningly evil apparently normal people like Guy can be.

Also, this movie is apparently worth rewatching, with so many little details.

reply

Yes, which is all the more incredible given that it was made before home video.
