Film Students 101
I don't know why I haven't been on this board before to write this, but I've gotta say: I've seen Rosemary's Baby over 100 times in my life, and each time, I marvel at the acting of Ruth Gordon, direction work of Roman Polanski, Cinematography of William Fraker, and the shock that William Castle(!) produced this!
It's a film student's analysis pick for sure. Ruth Roman's quirky, very New York of that time, performance is to die for! She deserved everything she got for she stole almost every scene she was in.
I will (anonymously) admit this, I think that is why when I have had old people take an interest in me, I run like the hills! I never let those neighbors in my house, never accept any food, etc. But all jokes aside, the filming and acting that Polanski directed here - case in point, pay attention to that scene where Guy goes and gets Minnie and Roman over to the apartment to 'congratulate' Rosemary on her pregnancy. It's funny, eerie, scary, strange, claustrophobic, makes you uncomfortable -- lots of adjectives...in a s few seconds work. It'll stick with you as much as Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho scene where Det. Arbogast falling down the steps after 'Mrs. Bates' attacks him with a knife. Great scenes, masterpieces.
