This is one of the funniest movies ever--seriously! I mean, it helps if you're Jewish to appreciate some of the nuanced humor amidst the general craziness, but it deserves a much higher rating. This 1968 (not 1967) movie, outshines both the remake and the Broadway show...by a country mile.
This was one of the best Mel Brooks movies, particularly compared to Robin Hood, History of the World, Spaceballs, and The 12 Chairs, but 8 is a more than fair rating.
I also think '8' is fair. I don't think it's anywhere near as good as his 2 masterpieces: BS and YF... HOWEVER...
It literally took -decades- for this to grow on me. People told me I -should- like it and I just didn't get it. But now, every time it comes on the oldies channel I find myself actually -wanting- to watch it... and laughing out loud and bits that I used to shrug at.
I think the thing is very uneven. There are bits that are just genius, but frankly, some of the bits are too broad for my taste... like a Carol Burnett skit that went on too long.
I agree. When I watched it, I was absolutely certain that THIS was the real life 'springtime for hitler', this was their way of telling people not to watch it.
The Producers will always be #1 of my list of funniest movies of all time. I LOL every time I see it (especially during the musical numbers), and I loved Dick Shawn and Kenneth Mars' performances.
