DVD finally arrives in the U.S. today

What a long wait it has been. Two years ago I saw a special screening of WITCHFINDER GENERAL (an English print with the correct title), and producer Philip Waddilove said the DVD would come out in August. More than two years later, it's finally here, and I will pick mine up sometime today.

Anyway, celebrate this auspcious event with a retrospective article about the making of the film: http://cinefantastiqueonline.com/2007/09/11/witchfinder-general-1968

Such a tragedy! We'll never know if Reeves would have truly fulfilled his promise, but it sure would have been fun finding out! Thanks for these links, too!

Read the "Mystery of Michael Reeves" articles. Pretty good but one flaw caught my eye.

There's a quote from someone who seems mystified that Michael Reeves admired and wanted to emulate Don Siegel, who is dismissed as "technically action director."

Before directing Clint Eastwood action films like DIRTY HARRY, Siegel directed INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS and lots of other good low-budget genre movies. It's easy to see why Reeves would admire the man: he managed to make something working with limited resources; he never just phoned it in - he did the best he could with what he had.

One can easily see the parallels with Reeves, who made his films for next to nothing. Working with no money on low-brow material, he did his best to make something good.
