The song based on the movie

It's a little tangential, but I was wondering if anyone here is familiar with the song Hopkins (The Witchfinder General) by the UK doom/stoner metal band, Cathedral. The song was actually what encouraged me to seek out the film itself, as the band used multiple audio clips from the movie for atmosphere.

Love that Cathedral cd! I think I have like 4-5 cds, all doom, with referance to this movie. Off the top of my head:

- Withchfinder General is a NWOBHM/doom band from the early 80s
- Electric Wizard (Doom/stoner metal) has a song named "I, The Witchfinder"
- The Cathedral song you mentioned "Hopkins (The Witchfinder General)"

Folk/rock singer Mandy Morton also wrote a song inspired by the film.

From 'The Freak Emporium' reviews:-

Mandy Morton And Spriguns - Magic Lady.

Late 70s release from the band formerly known as Spriguns Of Tolgus. By now the emphasis was on folk-rock balladry and vocalist Mandy Morton had been pushed out front to the point where this nearly became a solo album. Among the album's highlights are 'Witchfinder' 'Gypsy Glass' 'Ghost Of A Song' (the whole album has a mystical, supernatural aura)........

"Woof. In tones of low menace"

Imo there's an even better song about the movie/Matthew Hopkins by Paul Roland, it's called "The Witchfinder General":

About half an hour ago, I found out a very interesting new fact about Paul Ferris' OST...

"Oh look - a lovely spider! And it's eating a butterfly!"

The clip 'she has written to the sabbath, she has made love to the devil, she is a witch!" is actually from Mark of the Devil though.

Ah, never knew that

Witchfinder General's debut LP is a somewhat forgotten doom classic. It's called Death Penalty. Songs like "Invisible Hate" and "Burning a sinner" may sound a bit dated now, but I love this band. Great pioneering domm band, sadly forgotten. Think Saint Vitus with a more 70's sound. Really awesome.

Great Cathedral song, fantastic band. The video for the song has clips from the film too, wanna watch it now

Yeah, i've heard it, and seen Cathedral perform it live. One of the most hillarious experiences of my life!

Half of the clips in the Cathedral song were actually taken from Michael Armstrong's 1970 "witchfinder" film, Mark of the Devil. If you like films such as Witchinder General and Blood on Satan's Claw then it's definitely worth seeking out a good copy of this.
Long-standing German Doom Metal band Dawn of Winter also wrote a song based on the movie called 'Witchfinder' which can be found on their 1994 album Doomcult Performance.
As for the NWOBHM band, Wicthfinder General, I'd recommend their second album, Friends of Hell, over the debut any day of the week. The lyrics aren't much better though!

What about Mandy Morton's brilliant "Witchfinder"?
