confused....

The biggest thing I'm confused about is why Nicky went to jail. They said he embezzled, but if his "profession" was gambling, then he's pretty much his own employer, and he works for himself, so how can he embezzle?

One other thing (I may have zoned off at the time this was explained)... in the beginning, if Fanny was so bad that they made her leave, then how come a few minutes later they hired her?

any explanations would be helpful. I have trouble with details sometimes :-D

1. Nick's profession was gambling, but he was going through an extended losing streak. At the same time, Fanny's career continued to ascend. This caused him to feel inferior & emasculated. If you recall, Nick turned down the original proposal from "Peterson" at the racetrack to act as a front man for a phony bond deal (selling bonds that either weren't authentic or for a company that doesn't even exist).

When Nick discovers that Fanny is behind the scenes financing his share of a partnership with Tom to open a new gambling club, he can't deal with the humiliation and calls Peterson out of desperation to get in on the phony bond deal. Peterson & Arnstein got caught, and that's why he was arrested.

2. After Keeny (the proprieter of the dance hall) and Eddie escort Fanny out of the stage door after firing her, she goes back to the stage alone to sing about her frustration. She doesn't realize Eddie is still within ear shot. He hears her sing, realizes her talent, and sneaks her into the show without Keeny's approval hoping that she will dazzle the audience and win over Keeny. Indeed, that's what happens.

But we all know that was fiction in the movie, about the only thing that was true was his name. lol That is why it makes not sense or is confusing. lol In real life he was a hoodlum that was part of a big gang. Who use Fanny Brice's money and almost bankrupted her. He was still married to another women at the time he was locked up in Sing Sing. But in the movie they have him and Brice married with kids. A straight up gangster who my grandparents remembered. He was one of the the guys who were running with the people who were involved in the Black Sox scandal He was in Sing Sing for wiretapping and later got caught with stolen security bonds, millions of dollars worth and was sent to Leavenworth that is when she finally divorced him. But not before he almost drained all of her money because he did not plea innocent as it is depicted in the movie he h,id and then when caught he pleaded not guilty an went through a 4 year protracted court battle using his wifes money until it was lamost gone. Fanny Brice's daughter was married to Ray Stark the Producer of the movie and the Broadway musical so they were not going to let her father look like the cad he really was. Which is understandable.

Fanny Brice knew that he was a crook long before she married him. She used to visit him in Sing Sing, and his then wife sued Brice for alienation of affections. Moreover, Brice had been married before.

This movie is an almost sickeningly sweet whitewashing of Brice's life.
