Nick admitted to avoiding Fanny because he felt she was heading towards something she was not ready for, but then a year later he decided she was ready and they had that whole you are woman I am man moment. I don't get it. I think he just said that to cover his ass.
haha...I think in the movie it was supposed to just be sweet of him - and to show how much had happened to the little girl from Henry Street who was now a big star already....

I think it was kind of him to allow her to grow up a little. He wanted her to gain some independence before making his move. It also showed much confidence on his part. This confidence slowly began to erode, however.
In real life, Fanny Brice had a brief marriage and divorce as a teenager. She definitely wasn't a virgin when she met Arnstein! That seduction scene was kind of stupid, especially by today's standards. But it wasn't even true back then. So much of this movie is fabricated. I'm embarrassed to watch it now. She keeps saying how "ugly" she is as she bows and scrapes for Arnstein.
Very true. And to top it off the reason he probably waited had nothing to do with waiting for her to grow up or some other romantic notion, The fact is that he was married and when he got locked up the first time, the only time we see in the movie, he was still married to another women. It was not until a few years later did his wife sue for a divorce that Brice and him got married. Arnstien was a gangster in the worst way. People should not be fooled by the portrait of him in the movie. He almost drove her to the poor house. The movie made it seem he was the money maker. When in fact she was the highest paid performer for Ziegfeld and made plenty of money.
Gambling was the least of his transgressions, He was in a major gang that was responsible for the theft of millions of dollars of securities. He ran from the law and when he was finally caught and was getting ready to be sent to Leavenworth she divorced him. He also was involved in the black Sox scandal.
And you are right about how she always says she is ugly. Have you ever seen a picture of Arnstien? He ws lucky anyone that walked upright looked in his direction. See his daughter with Brice was married to the Producer of the movie. Arnstein was still alive, Brice was not when the play and the move came out I wonder if that is why they make concessions for him.
You're right on the money. They made concessions because Arnstein was still alive and threatened lawsuits if he was portrayed badly. So they whitewashed his more criminal acts and made him a harmless 'gambler'.

Bumping your comment up, since TCM just ran Funny Girl 2 nights ago. Brice's constant references to her ugliness ruins the whole film. This isn't about bravery, or love, or passion..it's about one women's self hatred.
