Anybody else watch this movie because of Pawn Stars?

I'm almost 40 years old and never heard of Steve McQueen or the movie "Bullitt", until I started watching Pawn Stars. On the show, they keep mentioning on how Rick Harrison is a huge McQueen fan and how Bullitt was one of his favourite movies. I finally had to look up this movie and watch it for myself to see what all this hype was and to see the most famous car chases in Hollywood history.

I was actually surprised how good this movie was. Even the car scene was pretty cool. Definitely a movie I will be watching again.

Same here. Heard it so many times on Pawn Star, decided to watch. Was also mentioned on NCIS. Slow pace for me and sadly, probably because I have seen so many car chase scenes, was not impressed by it. I always dread the movies that show you every step the character takes. Wake up, eat, get dress, go to my car, drive down the street, get to work, etc. I realize that is the style of the time, but the movie could be boiled down to 30 minutes today.

How could you not like that car chase? Do you need CGI to enjoy it? This is the car chase that all others are measured by

Don't need CGI, but chase scenes were contrived. What does that mean? It means it added ZERO value to the story and was put in to spice up what is a rather slow movie. And the cutting of every part of the chase was just horrible. Every time the camera moves away from the car means it was a scene. Watch it again. Some car chases follow the action from start to finish with very little pause. Here, every turn was filmed, then another angle, than another, than another...I think you get it. It would have been amazing if it was just one long chase filmed continuously. Then I would be impressed. And regardless of how it was filmed, if you took it out of the movie, would the story differ? No.

And the cutting of every part of the chase was just horrible.

Frank P. Keller won the 1968 Academy Award for Best Film Editing due in no small part for his editing of the car chase.

So much for that criticism.

Sadly, it proves my point. The car chase scenes was derived and the editing was over used. And still to the point, if you are able to hold it for that long, the chase was not needed as it added little value to the movie. I hate to compare it to today, as technology and audience tolerance has changed, but the movie did not age well. I compare it to Dances with Wolves. Great when it came out, but today, wouldn't make the cut.

Actually, I'm not an American. That's probably why I have never heard of this actor or movie. Keep in mind, not all of the world lives in the US, just the unfortunate few.

Great when it came out, but today, wouldn't make the cut.

It's a fair summation. Watching Bullitt in a theater on a full-screen in 1968 for the first time would have been a stunning experience. In that regard, it's great.

But watching it on dvd at home with the ability to rewind and stop scenes is far different. No one back in '68 could have foreseen that situation. If they had, things might have been done a bit differently. Back then, using multiple cameras for a single scene, then using all the footage in the final film, was standard practice for action scenes. The only way to truly catch it would have been to re-watch the movie at the theater, and that didn't happen (at least not until Star Wars).

How can you be 40 and never heard of Bullitt? Have you been living in a cave all your life? or are you Amish or something? That's like saying "I never heard of the Statue of Liberty or World War II".

S6E07 of Blue Bloods "The Bullitt Mustang" was about the car.
