My sweet lord this movie is boring AF

I guess it just didn't age very well but it plods along so dreadfully.

reply

It's contemplative, which is something that contemporary audiences may not be very accustomed to.

reply

This. Attention span has decreased over the decades. I don't blame the younger viewers for that, they were raised with it as the norm. But it does tend to get in the way of enjoying different film styles with different paces.

I found it to be the most boring film possible the first time I watched it. That first time I expected something like Star Trek or Star Wars, which had dominated my ideas of SF, or even Aliens. The second time, which was mostly by accident, was a wholly different experience. I fell in love with it and since then I have probably watched it a dozen times and read several books about it. There is no other film quite like it. I remember seeking out the novel by Clarke, which is enjoyable but falls well short of the film and is one of his more mediocre efforts. It's odd because I see the novel frequently listed as one of the best SF novels. It's not even one of Clarke's best. But as I read more of Clarke, I then started reading other SF writers, which opened me up to an even richer SF universe. And most of them have never been adapted to film or tv. But even if they do, it will be something with forced diversity, like the Foundation series.

reply

Considering Asimov's later novels in the Foundation series, and his own clearly stated social & cultural views, he wouldn't have minded more diverse casting for the series in the least. It's the ideas that truly matter, not who's espousing them, in the Foundation books. He offered more diverse characters in his late-in-life novels himself.

reply

No, it's not just the ideas. It's also the characters who inhabit the novels. Making Hardin a black woman? Are you joking? Nope. Making Gaal a black woman, too? LOL What nonsense. We finally get a chance to see one of the truly great SF works put to film or tv and they decide instead to use it as liberal propaganda. And they got the wrong guy to play Seldon. I won't watch this liberal crapfest. I will just read the trilogy again.
Diversity is strangling America. It's not making us better. China is eating us alive and they are about the least diverse country ever.

reply

Asimov himself would have disagreed with you.

reply

No, he wouldn't and even if he did I don't care. This forced diversity is suffocating America. Is it too hard for black producers, and they exist, to create original material with black characters? Or how about adapt stories with black characters? They exist. Black SF writers have been around a long time. Even black gay SF writers.
Bottom line? I won't waste my time watching liberal propaganda.

"This conversation can serve no purpose anymore."

reply

Have you ever read any SF by a black author?

reply

You're not bored; you're boring.

reply

Maybe you should stick with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
