Seasons 4 thru 6 Are the Best

I think the seasons with Will Lorin as the head writer are the best. You had the cross-cutting, cutaways ("You Don't Have to Kill to Get Rich, But It Doesn't Hurt"), and titles of episodes broken up ("Didn't We Meet at a Murder?"), as well as interesting plots and weird camera angles. The Curtis Kenyon/Ken Pettus stuff under the Sweeney/Finnegan production team is good, but the episodes from seasons 4 thru 6 seem a cut above the ordinary.

Lorin also apparently wrote the very last episode of The Untouchables with Leonard Freeman executive-producing.

"The Curtis Kenyon/Ken Pettus stuff under the Sweeney/Finnegan production team" actually was season 6 (and 7). Will Lorin was the story consultant only for seasons 4 and 5 under the Sweeney/Finnegan production team.

Personally I can't decide whether I prefer seasons 1 thru 3 or seasons 4 thru 6. It's like choosing between your children - impossible to choose. I really can't exclude any of those seasons from my collection - they are all Five-0 at its very best. Though if I *HAD* to chose only 1 season to keep it'd probably be season 1. I just love that inaugural season to death! Everything was just so fresh, fresh, fresh!

There are episodes during the Will Lorin seasons where I wasn't planning to watch where the teaser really grabbed me and either tempted me to watch or got me to watch. I'd have a hard time coming up with a season with teasers as engaging as "And While You're at It, Bring Me the World." There's a murder, Five-O is alerted, and McGarrett is waylaid on his way to the scene. Season 2 is the most uneven of the early seasons. The one with the college professor working Wo Fat starts out intriguingly, but by the end, it comes off as kind of dopey, with McGarrett rushing off to the darkened college by himself and losing his gun, or maybe that's just Anthony Lawrence (I had a similar problem with "Six Dead Cows...").

If I didn't know any better I'd think you purposely twisted this one. It was "While You're at It, Bring in the Moon".

Ok, here I will do my best to rank the first 6 seasons:

1. Season One
2. Season Three
3. Season Five
4. Season Six
5. Season Two
6. Season Four

But mind you this can change at a moment's notice - I love all 6 equally! I think seasons 2 and 4 are tied for me. So are seasons 5 and 6. I think I tend to prefer the Kono years slightly, hence why seasons 1 and 3 are at the top. Also I rather like the various espionage stories - which were more prevalent in the early seasons with Kono. Episodes like "Nightmare Road", "A Bullet for McGarrett", "Sweet Terror", "Leopard on the Rock", "And a Time to Die", "The Second Shot", "The Reunion", etc.

Season 2 is the most uneven of the early seasons.

Personally I found season 2 to be very even. The only stinker was "To Hell with Babe Ruth". All the other episodes were very solid. "A Bullet for McGarrett" (along with "The Singapore File") is actually my favorite from the season. Love Eric Braeden as the villainous Farrar!

You're right, but I was going by memory.

As best as I can recall, I'd rank the first six seasons as follows:

1. Season Four
2. Season Five
3. Season One
4. Season Six
5. Season Three
6. Season Two

There are some good Season Two episodes, but that also seems to be the season where you're most likely to see shots of McGarrett or Danny driving somewhere to the Hawaii Five-O theme.

Are you saying this is a bad thing? Any driving scenes to the tune of Five-0 are awesome!

reply

Yes, it's a bad thing. It comes across as filler. Most of the other seasons, they're usually leaving the office, arriving at the scene, or the scene just cuts to them at the next location with the questioning in progress.

"He IS Redstone."

Personally I like it. It has that "early season" feel to it which I am always very fond of.

I get more excited over McGarrett arriving somewhere to "The Chase."

My ranking of the first six seasons (this is an old list, I may have updated it since) is:

1.
3.
6.
5.
2.
4.

reply

Hey! Your list is almost identical to mine, Mr. Mike.

Just swap seasons 5 and 6. Although 5 and 6 are pretty much tied anyway. So basically my list IS identical to yours.

I've bought 1 - 4 so far. I wasn't sure how many seasons to get. Love the show!!! Guess going up to 6 is safe.

I wrote "many", not "all". I know that ringfire211, Jeffman61, and myself did not buy Seasons 10-12.

However, ringfire is making his way through season 10 via Netflix streaming. It's still quite enjoyable. With only one or two real turkeys to speak of. (I do hate "Tread the King's Shadow" with a seething passion!! ). I will continue on through season 11 and 12 as well. Obviously I've seen all these episodes already but this was more than 10 years ago. So it's a great refresher for me. Great show!

Hey, you weren't supposed to start watching Season 10 until you finished reposting "Thoughts on Season 9"! Just kidding!

I know what you meant. I wanted the poster to whom you responded to hear from someone who did buy them all. No offense was intended.

My favourite episode is Ten Thousand Diamonds and a Heart. It's a heist episode that's so well written you almost cheer for the villain to get away.

It's great to see a well thought out plan, get de-railed on a few simple clues. Love it.
Even though the electronics are dated given todays technology. A little re-write you could have the same episode today.

I love season 3 and 1.

My favorites are Seasons 4-9, followed by 1-3, which are still great.

Hello, you may be right about this. One of the best episodes was called The
Reunion, or The Deadly Reunion, with Simon Oakland. This was season 3, and this
maybe my favorite episode of all of the old ones. If not, probably in the top
7 or 8.
My wife has been watching these episodes with me, and she enjoys this show too.
She thought Danno was hot.
Jack Lord had a good voice, and there were some good guest stars, Don Porter,
Mako, John Fujioka, Loyd Bochner, John Beck, and others.
Please reply if possible,
Sincerely, Colley.

I just finished watching my Season 1 set and it was terrific. I may check out the later seasons if I find the DVDs cheap.

Are you kidding? By that definition the "'V' for Vashon" trilogy, "Hookman", "One Big Happy Family" and other highly acclaimed episodes aren't worth watching.

I have to agree with you Doctor. The first couple seasons were indeed good but I remember the ones from 1971-on especially (which also were my high school years) But starting in September, 1974 they changed the background music that we were so accustomed to the last 3 years or so which was a sour note to me. Leonard Freeman died not too long after that if I'm not mistaken. Still the episodes were good for a couple years. Quality seem to dip by fall, 1976 & by 1977 I only watched if TV Guide's description appealed to me or not. As far as I'm concerned the May, 1978 murder of Chin Ho ended it. Why couldn't they just let him retire instead of killing him off? Or maybe have him held hostage or kidnapped by the gang but survive. I never watched that episode ever again.

"Didn't We Meet at a Murder" probably had one of the biggest surprises in the entire series. They cast Simon Oakland who was one of the top supporting actors of the 1970s (and probably well paid) only to have him pumped full of lead 12 minutes into the show. Had to have been one of his shortest roles during that era.

Only season 4 to 6??

Sorry ,but I say Seasons 1 through 11.

No ,not saying'all' of the shows are perfect but compared to
Season 12 (Which isn't "all that bad") the rest rank from good to great.

The one or two clunkers ,I can only call 'a bit laughable'.

Go for it or just be a gopher!
