Do right-wingers really hate this show?
I heard that many right-wingers were so hateful towards this show because of Jack Lord, and because he was against the 2nd amendment.
Really? That's news to me.

Right wingers hate everything so it's certainly possible.
shareI never heard where Lord was against the 2nd Amendment, just for wanting tighter gun controls. Coming from someone old enough to have watched H50 when it was on, this is certainly news to me.
shareDon't see why this was even necessary -
rude & offensive comment that it is

Don't be silly. I'm so right wing my sister calls me "Mussolini," and I love this show, and Jack Lord's character as well. I disagree with his gun control stance, but that doesn't effect the way I feel about the show, or the man for that matter.
I can't help wonder about the apparent disconnect between McGarret's habit of shooting someone in nearly every episode and Lord's feelings about guns. Hypocritical if you ask me--but not worth hating someone over it.
In general, it seems to me that the producers of this show were relatively ignorant when it comes to gun-handling and the facts surrounding guns. I always chuckle when I see Dano, the supposed weapons expert, take a "sniper" shot from a standing, unsupported position, but the public was far more ignorant about gun handling in those days.
In any event, I'll continue watching (and enjoying) the show, Jack Lord's politics aside.

Wow, I must have to say I really agree with last post from "Ivrepoman". I am very right ring with my politics and I have always known that Jack Lord was for more gun control laws. That really does not come into play on the show much. There were a few shows that mentioned gun control laws and it was not that offensive to me. I have never owed a gun, but do not believe that gun control does one thing to stop criminals from killing people. If they want a gun, they will find a way to get one.
Every once in a while the show offended me with slightly left wing stuff, but overall I love the show. Jack Lord was iconic as Mcgarret and he did a great job. My favorite will always be Danno and then I liked Ben second. I also love the Wo Fat episodes. That was great tv. I am watching The Ninety Second War right now and I love it.
I read about the Game of Thrones episode depicting Bush 43. It's no surprise to me. Hollywodd has always hated conservatives. That why I laugh when I read left wingers talk about right wingers hating everything. I have always believed they are the biggest hypocrites in the world. They have to be the most hateful people towards anyone who disagrees with them. It made me sick to hear what Game of Thrones did. I would hope a conservative show would never do something like that to the other side of the political aisle. That is one reason why I am a conservative. I believe for the most part conservatives don't play that game of hate. As a Christian conservative, I try really hard not to hate liberals, but it is really hard sometimes with the continuois filth they put out in print and on tv and movies. I hate when politics ever come up in any form because I know the conservative bashing is about to begin.
no interest in the new Hawaii Five-o, but the original is great and I own all 12 seasons on DVD. Out of the 284 episodes, I would say there were 10-20 stinkers, but I would say about 50% were great and the rest were really good to good. The actors, scenery, music and storylines make this show a classic.
Sadly, I have come to expect a complete double-standard from the the liberal community--not all liberals, but at least a majority of them. For all of their protests about despising stereotypes and generalizations, they have no trouble lumping conservatives together as a bunch of nuts. For all of their talk about the sanctity of the First Amendment and freedom of speech, they immediately vilify any conservative who chooses to speak up. I've found this intolerance to be especially true among better educated liberals, who are so convinced of their own intellectual superiority that they can't bear to think of another intelligent person who would dare to disagree with them.
What is really funny about this is that most of the conservatives I know are pretty tolerant of liberals. I, for one, would hate to live in a world where everyone agreed with me. I think it is important for a healthy democracy to have a wide and divergent set of opinions among its citizens. There are relatively few liberals whom I truly dislike. I may find them misguided, but I respect most of them. On the other hand, I'm just blown away by the amount of hate leveled at conservatives by top-tier liberals. Again, it is utterly hypocritical, but they don't recognize this at all.
Furthermore, despite the accusations which are so often hurled at conservatives, we conservatives are capable of rational thought and can separate the opinions espoused by an actor from the shows in which they appear. Again, it is dumbfounding to me that so many actors, including Lord, can appear in TV shows and movies that glorify violence--especially firearms related violence--and at the same time tell people they are too stupid to own guns. The Hawaii portrayed in Lord's show was far more violent than the actual state--being packed top to bottom with mobsters, hit men, and crazies, but his show was full of victims who just sat there like slaughterhouse animals, waiting for the axe to fall with no ability to fight back. Small consolation to the dead people that McGarrett would catch the murderer. I'd rather defend myself and stay alive than know that the Five-0 team would eventually catch the killer, who in the state of Hawaii had nothing more to fear than a supposed "life in prison" sentence. Never-the-less, it was a fun show that I still enjoy.
I recently came across a great example of the sort of double standard that is commonly espoused by so many elite Hollywood liberals. In Mathew Modine's memoir about shooting the film "Full Metal Jacket," he describes going to Stanley Kubrick's home and shooting an arsenal full of automatic weapons in the director's back yard. These shooting sessions have nothing to do with the movie. He even talks about shooting watermelons with an full-automatic shotgun! What's more, these sorts of weapons were (and are) completely illegal for civilians in the UK! Apparently he didn't feel the law applied to an ivory tower philosopher such as himself. And this is a guy would cheerfully support outlawing weapons for most of us! It is a common view held among so many liberals--the laws which they support for all of us peasants should not apply to themselves. Does this make me angry? Sure. But does it mean I will never watch Full Metal Jacket again? Hardly.
After all, R. Lee Ermy is in it! ;-)

Uh can't we just shut up about this and just discuss the show?
Lot of idiots on these IMDB boards.
Given the huge cultural influence television and movies have upon our society, it is hard to see how a discussion of this influence and how it may be relevant and logical, or hypocritical and worthy of scrutiny, seems imminently suitable to this board. For my money, these questions are much more applicable (and interesting) than questions about how characters wear there hair. (Go way back to the late 90's and you will see rant after rant posted by me about how Jeri Ryan was wearing her hair, so I am not immune;-))
This is not the first time you and I have crossed paths on these boards, and from the looks of it, we like many of the same shows. There are discussions on these boards which don't particularly interest me, and I don't waste my time commenting them. Perhaps you should confine your comments to the threads which fit the types of one or two line comments which your appear to enjoy. No problem with that. I enjoy more thoughtful discussions which necessarily entail longer posts. If you don't like them, don't post on them. Lots of people do enjoy them, and frankly, it is unfriendly to tell us to shut up. If, on the other hand, you disagree with one of us, by all means, state your point. We may learn something. Just don't be afraid to present a cogent argument. Stating that you disagree by itself, (or worse yet, just telling us to shut up) doesn't do a lot to advance your idea.

I'm sure a lot of conservatives watch this show as well as liberals. Besides the gun stance which only came up in a few episodes and was only blatant and in your face in one, "Use a Gun, Go to Hell".
24 is considered a very right wing show, I've even heard it called "radical right-wing propaganda", but some liberals watch it because they can separate their views from a piece of entertainment. Just like conservatives who watch shows with different politics than theirs.
Machtach:Why are you such a jerk to everyone on these boards? What is your problem?
Almost Heaven, West Virginia!
I don't have a problem.
Here's a classic show that was one of the most successful cop shows in history and some nut posts some dumb subject and turns it into a political discussion is the problem.
Pardon the pun mactach, but you are bang on! I haven't seen this show in years but I am watching season 3 on Sky now and it`s great! It`s a classic cop show that still holds up well after 40 odd years. I don`t think the reboot(which I enjoyed for seasons 1 and 2 before it went bad)will fare as well.
sharelvrepoman:
Oh,please---in a nutshell, it's you right wingers who always think you're so much better than everyone else, and like shoving your right-wing beliefs down everyone else's throat. And you're so damn close-minded, y'all can't stand anyone disagreeing with you, and if they do, the first thing you want to do is scream that they're liberal just because they disagree with you, or have a different view from you--or because they won't swallow your right wing bull****. Everything's so black and white with you conservatives,it's sickening. Plus you can't change some show or the whole damn world to fit your conservative beliefs, and conservatives don't a have a damn claim on being patriotic, either. Also, Hollywood isn't as liberal as you think it is---that's just a myth spread by the right wing--there are conservatives there, too, just like anywhere else. Bottom line---both liberals and conservatives live in this country, and there's more than enough damn room for everyone to have their opinions, period. Like I said, conservatives do not have a claim on having opinions or beliefs. This world would be boring as hell if everyone thought alike, and you know it. Also, Hawaii Five-O is a cop show, not a political show. Get the hell over yourself about that, please.

Better check your source....
Fans I know knew how to separate their politics from entertainment. Lost lesson that needs to come back
& don't forget that the political climate back then was way different from now.
ams
Tell that to today's right-wingers who vowed never to watch HBO's Game of Thrones ever again, after they discovered that the severed head at the end of season 1 was a representation of Bush 43.
They'll think you're a moron for even thinking about separating politics from entertainment.
There's also a huge difference between the supposed reasons for not watching original Five0 & for not watching the HBO show....what they claimed to do with the head was blatant disrespect & not a disagreement of policy. That show should be boycotted people no matter their political affiliation & no matter if they used Bush or Clinton or Obama or Nixon
ams
The O.P. question is stupid. Believe it or not, there are many left-wingers (liberals) who support the 2nd Amendment and own guns. Personally, I'd consider myself to the right (who owns guns), and I love this old show.
So.........thread fail!

Was Jack Lord for gun control, yes! Yet did Jack Lord give Elvis Presley two pearl gold revolvers as a gift in the early 1970's, yes!
How many times did Steve McGarret have to kill his perp? BTW the "Book em Danno" phrase didn't stick until the original creator of the show Leonard Freeman died in 1974. Prior to that after over 100 episodes Steve said....Danno less than ten times.

We are all individuals with opinions. In my opinion, there are as many "liberals" who dislike this show. Why? I think the show just was an honest look at reality. I do not feel that it was politically biased and preachy. I felt that it was a show that makes people think and ask questions. That is just my opinion, though.
shareNo doubt, there was no political agenda going on in this show. Pure entertainment.
share Gosh, I started watching this show as a kid and fell in love with Hawaii. I had no idea about Jack Lord's politics. Now I do and it still makes no difference to me. He seemed like a very lovely person. I read a magazine interview of his from the seventies (I actually STILL have the magazine...some where in the attic). He said that he didn't care about black power, or white power. He was for a "rainbow race." He said "the people here (Hawaii) are kind and gentle."
He also tried his best to set a good example for young people. McGarrett never smoked or drank alcohol. When offered a drink, he would make a point of turning it down. Many shows aimed at kids had a lot of drinking. On Bewitched, for example, Darrin usually had a drink when he came home from the office. In one episode he came home drunk and he had obviously driven himself home. He didn't allow smoking in his office either. Unusual for that time period.
McGarrett definitely had a few drinks in Season 1, and may have smoked once or twice (on that score, my memory fails me), but after that, he absolutely set an example that was ahead of its time by not drinking or smoking, or even dating women onscreen after a few hints during the early episodes.
Jack Lord was indeed a lovely person. I remember the radio ads in 1978 where he read from Genesis: "'And God created great whales,'" he quoted, after which he implored people to prevent the destruction of these beautiful creatures. I was 15 at the time, and had always liked "Hawaii Five-O" and Jack Lord. His love and compassion for environmental causes turned him into my hero forever.
Seems like I recall there being a big uproar in the first few seasons about the opening of Hawaii Five O. There used to be a revolver with the cylinder spinning on the opening credits. They removed that part and replaced it with something else. I don't remember what year they made the switch but I know it was before '74.
shareThe revolver with the cylinder spinning was just before Zulu's (Kono) credit. That was seasons 1-4. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AepyGm9Me6w#t=0m44s
Then starting with season 5 it was replaced with a flaming car going over a cliff followed by Al Harrington's (Ben) credit.
But I'm curious - why was there an uproar over the revolver? I've never heard that before. It's someone loading a gun. It's a police show. Seems like a natural thing to me. Guns have been featured on TV since the Lone Ranger back at the start of the 1950s. I don't see why this would be an issue in 1968.
Connery, Moore, and Brosnan! Accept NO substitutes!
Wow! Thank you for posting that link. I haven't seen that clip of film since they removed it. It goes by so fast and it's only a few frames of film.
I can't seem to recall why they (who) took issue with the revolver scene. I was in my early 20's at that time. I just remember that I heard it was being edited out. I know it was prior to '74 because we moved to another location in June of '74.
I'm wondering if in fact Jack Lord was a gun control advocate, if he could have had anything to do with it. I remember the '70's were also the beginning of the "war" on sex and violence on TV.
Much like the campaign against violent video games children play with today.
I'm wondering if in fact Jack Lord was a gun control advocate
My understanding is that Jack Lord was very strongly in favor of gun-control, even being against guns for hunting. BTW, I am a conservative and I still enjoyed the series, watching it almost every week on KIRO the CBS affiliate in Seattle in the 1970's. Some time after this I moved to Kansas and then to my present home in Oklahoma.
At the time, it was my favorite cop show.
This show was an honest look at reality?
lol
I totally loved this show in the 70s and still do today. But I would never describe it as an honest look at reality. Do you understand how small these islands are? The scale of criminal operations and numbers of murders depicted in the series is so far out of line with reality and even possibility.
The truth is, there is no such thing as a police organization similar to Five-O. Hawaii doesn’t have a force like that. It’s a pretty small place—it doesn’t need one.
[deleted]
It's only boring if you can't pay attention to a storyline. Every scene and bit of dialogue was important to the story. The shows were also five minutes longer than they are now, and they had more time to tell a story, and violence and action was not relied upon to get a story going.
Modern shows have gotten shorter with more shooting and car chases, with everything filmed at lightning speed, making it look like it's going fast, but that doesn't make them better.
I find modern shows to be very boring, because of the clichés, multiple storylines, and lack of original writing and acting. That is the case with the new Hawaii Five-O. The old Hawaii Five-O never bores me, as the storylines were all interesting and unique, and if you blinked, you missed something.
So what if Jack Lord believed in gun control? Big bloody deal! This was a TV show about some cops in Hawaii, not a political commentary show.
shareIf he was so anti-gun, how come he didn't mind so many people getting shot each week on his show?
shareThere were a few episodes, the scripts of which did seem to argue in favor of more gun-laws. But to balance it out a bit, there were also episodes where privately-owned arms were protrayed favorably.
However, I still believe that Lord favored more restrictions on guns.
That's news to me, too.
shareWell Hawaii is a solid Blue state and this show was so cool. It's all about Aloha and even most of the police are Hawaiian. Everything rightwingers are against.
share"Right-wingers" are against Hawaii and cool shows and Aloha and police and native Hawaiian police?
You need to get out more. You are TOTALLY out of touch with the real world. ROFLMAO (yes, laughing at you)
