Season 1 episode: Log 51 A Jumper Code 2

Why wasn't this episode the 2nd or 3rd episode shown? It's obviously among the first to be shot. Mac makes a point that this was Reed's 3rd week on the job; Reed calls Malloy "sir" a few times as he did in the first episode; Malloy tells Reed a couple of times that he's learning; and Reed seems a bit befuddled when Brinkman razzes them for their light caseload. Yet it was the 19th episode of the series and by then Reed had a clue and he and Malloy had become pretty tight (especially in Season 1's best episode Log 33 where Reed shoots and kills a teen sniper).

Only reason I can think of about why this episode was held back was because there wasn't much action and the producers and the network wanted to showcase more exciting episodes to build an audience for the new show.

All in all, this is one of the weaker Season 1 episodes with the only real highlight being Malloy dealing with the guy trying to jump off the building.

YOu're entirely correct. According to the "Adam12code3" website, "Although not aired until 2/15/69, Log 51- A Jumper, Code 2 - Season 1, Episode 19 was the second episode filmed (or officially, the first episode after the Pilot was approved by NBC for series) with a brief summary of the upcoming episode with the radio dispatcher calls in the opening credits. NBC choose not to air this show immediately. It finally appears in the series as the 19th episode of the first season."

My instincts were correct...too bad for the dvd set it wasn't put back in its original place. Not that Adam 12 was a serial, but I give credit to the producers and writers for gradually evolving the characters and especially the Malloy-Reed dynamic throughout its 7 season run. Still it's a bit jarring to watch Log 51 after watching the previous episodes as Reed seemed to suffer a major regression in his development as a patrol officer.

Thanks for the clarification!

That freaked me out when I heard it, it completely made me think that the entire 1st season basically covered like 3 weeks, and I was thinking that couldn't be right

Whew! Glad to know I wasn't crazy

I never really understood why Mac called Malloy on the carpet for his handling of the jumper situation. Yeah, I know what he did was risky, and if it's against standard procedure, that's not a good thing. But I'd think that Mac would understand that not all situations occur "by the book," so they can't always be handled "by the book." You know, like the line from Pirates of the Caribbean: "the [book] is more what you'd call 'guidelines' than actual rules."

Yeah - this is pretty much the nadir of Season 1 - for some reason, Webb/Cinader let Harry Morgan direct this one, and his direction is pretty awful...
