Haha, I'd bet $100 that Malloy hid that man-purse in the bottom of a closet and left it there. He only said what he did to the man at the store to keep him calm.
But yeah, they're much more accepted these days as laptop bags or messenger bags. Even Jack Bauer carried one-- the Jack-pack. :-p
There seemed to be a very brief period in the early '70s when such bags were the 'in' thing for men (well, for some men). In the cover photos for the Temptations' 1972 LP "All Directions" (the one with "Papa Was A Rolling Stone"), one of the male singers is wearing what would generally be thought of as a woman's pocketbook. A part of the unisex fashion of that time, apparently. I bet he wasn't still wearing it by the time their next album came out.
