Radio Dispatcher.

When the voice comes over on the police radio calling for Adam-12; are they paged if something is going on in their area, and do the officers have to phone in or log in to their vacinity? The reason why I ask is that, the radio voice always call Adam-12, but I never here any other cars being paged.

All units assigned to that frequency would be heard. There are a few episodes when we can hear other traffic, usually because Reed and Malloynare commenting on it. To keep it from becoming distracting its not heard at other times. When needed theynwould change to "tac 2", a different frequency, to talk to the Sargeant or other so the wouldn't interfere with regular radio traffic.

This is also true with the radios and Bio-Phoneon Emergency. They were just two way radios although the Bio-Phone could also transmit an analog signal from the Datascope EKG. There are a couple of times we hear other traffic on the Bio-Phone. The exception to this are the tones heard at the station when they are dispatched. Each Station had their own tones which activated lights and other items when received.

On Adam-12 we almost never hear other police units over the car radio-- only the dispatcher's side of the conversation. But you're right that we only hear the dispatcher addressing other units when the storyline calls for it, otherwise it's all muted and in the background so as not to be distracting.

On Emergency, that show sometimes took creative license with the dispatch system. Every now & then we hear Cap say "LA, this trash fire is under control, station 51 out twenty minutes." That's only so that we, the audience, will know that the engine is out on a run and we will probably see them in the next scene. In real life every station's or engine's comments are not (can't possibly be) broadcast live through the dispatch system.

Reed also had a habit of turning the volume down a bit, but many times you can hear other radio traffic
