American Graffiti
I can see some influence on American Graffiti here.
The mousey student, Alice, at the dance reminded me a lot of Carol in American Graffiti. Her mannerisms there, and also her friends name being Carol made me first think of this.
Also at the dance scene when the principal charges through the dance floor making sure people are staying vertical, reminded me of a similar scene where Steve Bolander tells his teacher to kiss a duck.
