Location of the interior shots

There seems to be some controversy over the location of the interior shots. I can absolutely state that the interior shots were of Haaren High School in Hell's Kitchen. I went there for 3 years, graduating in 1956. Furthermore, one of the exterior shots, where Sandy is going thru the door crowded by students, also looks like Haaren. It is the scene where the three doors were initially locked and she bangs to get in, and suddenly the doors open. That's exactly the
way it was every day for me, for three years. I loved the movie, but a
lot has to do with recognizing the background and the superb acting of
Sandy. I seem to remember there being a rumor in the 60's about the
original script calling for the girl who jumped out the window to die,
but the preview audiences gave negative feedback and it became
ambiguous in the final cut, claiming that she didn't die, at least not
initially, because she hit a ledge on the way down. Anyone who wants to
know what the interior of a typical New York City high school looked
like back then should see this flick, they didn't spruce anything up.
A funny thing about Haaren. There was a municipal swimming pool directly across the street and we would have to go swimming as part of PE and then go back out in the often freezing weather to get back to the school. Coach Wertheim was one of the best teachers there, along with Mrs Kurtz, the calculus teacher. Or was his name Wertheimer? I forget. And who could forget the Delany card made out to a student named Dick Hertz--with the new teacher always asking "Who's Dick Hertz?" to the glee of the all-boys classes.

Thanks for the reminiscence, John. I didn't go to Haaren High but the interior shots reminded me of my own high school: radiators, cracked plaster, windows with wooden frames that slid up with no screens, etc. This is one of my favorite movies.

You know, I've heard that it was shot at Haaren High School, and I visited the former location of Haaren High School, and I don't believe it was truly filmed there... at least not the exterior shots. For one thing, the land around the school building used in the movie is much flatter. For another, there are close shots of speeding traffic along the FDR/Harlem River Drive, and many of the garbage pales along the residential buildings behind Sandy Dennis & Ruth White are marked with names and addresses reading "East 100th Street"(Yes, I already know that this block has a much more modern housing complex, thank you). This has convinced me that the movie was actually shot at J.H.S. 99 in El Barrio.

FYI, in the book, Alice Blake didn't die.

Up the Down Stair Case was filmed at Benjamin Franklin High School in Spanish Harlem -- It is now called the Manhattan Center for Math & Science.

The school is across the street from the East River and the FDR Drive. Scenic if you ignore the industrial buildings on the Queens side.

This information was confirmed by one of my Deans who was also an exprincipal. I have also personally been inside the school.

Interestingly, there is a restaurant called Sandy that is located a couple of block from the school on 116th Street.

I also attended Haaren HS and any of the teachers that were at the school at the time can tell you that the movie was definetly filmed during the summer at Haaren. All the interior shots are Haaren, the exterior are elsewhere.

In the parody Mad Magazine did on the movie, Alice Blake didn't die when she jumped out the window because the classroom was on the 1st floor.

I saw that. I bought an old copy of that issue just so I could read that parody.

Do you see these scenes?

That's the Triborough Bridge in the background. You can only see it at that angle from places like East 99th and East 100th Streets near the FDR Drive.

Having watched the film closely and comparing it to images (Exterior) of J.H.S. 99 Julia De Burgos Junior High School 410 East 100th Street. ALL exterior shots are indeed shot at this location.

With a bit of composite research using Alan Parker's FAME, which shot a majority of it's Interiors at the formerHaaren High School, now 'Haaren Hall' as part of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice Campus on Tenth Avenue between 58th Street and 59th Street. And also the Pilot episode of the NBC TV Series FAME also shot at Haaren (Exterior & Interior) It's very clear ALL the interior shots for 'Up the Down Staircase' were indeed shot at Haaren.

Your links are gone, but you can go to Google maps, and incredibly, see the current exact same angles of the 100th street exteriors, as were filmed in 1966. (38 minutes into the movie.)

And, yes, on another message post, a person who claims to be in the film, states that interiors were Haaren (which ISN'T demolished), but is now John Jay College.
