Although I think it's a fine movie, it's a bit of a stretch picturing Audrey Hepburn as the virginal young thing she's supposed to be in the early flashbacks. After all, she was 38 when the movie was made. Jackie Bisset [in the choir] was 15 years her junior.
Then again, she looked fine as the older Joanna, and I guess you can't have it both ways. A very nice performance no matter her age.
Exactly she was 38, I think she's a fine actress, and despite her age her acting in this film, particularly portraying emotions as a younger woman, was outstanding. I'm glad you appreciate her performance. xx

I wonder if you can recognize a picture of Sophia Loren?. They couldn't be more different in their features.
Yet, along with Audrey these two women make the most beautiful faces on screen. And they are not just pretty faces. I'm referring to the sumum in the history of international cinema, as well as admirable human beings.

It's also interesting that she was 7 years older than Albert Finney in real life, but they don't visually appear to have that age gap. But I did notice in some scenes she was looking a titch old.

She was made up to look older for the scenes in which she is older. In the scenes where Joanna is young, Hepburn could pass for late 20's. Beautiful as ever.

I disagree, I could definitely see her age in the "younger scenes". Those were the ones I was specifically commenting about. It's not the end of the world, but it did kind of take me off guard. They should have used a soft focus filter or something.

shareShe pulls off her 'youngish' scenes beautifully and, at 38, was age appropriate for the character. They are both quite marvelous, IMO and the issue of age was moot for me. It is interesting that within a year, her own 15 year marriage to Mel Ferrer ends in divorce -- all the more resonance for Hepburn that shows in her excellent portrayal.

Audrey Hepburn definitely pulled it off. She always looked considerably much younger when she wore her hair long, oppose to the stylish swingin' sixties mod cut. The story takes place over the course of their 12-year marriage and the age of Audrey Hepburn is such a minor detail when discussing the great performances from Finney and Hepburn drawn from the acerbic wit of Frederick Raphael's screenplay.

Well, you're in good company with that opinion. The book "Cult Movies" states that Pauline Kael wrote in The New Republic that Hepburn seemed too old for Finney, even if the age difference in reality was small.
