He was staying in the school. It appeared to me that he found satisfaction taking kids and polishing then for the real world. Later on in real life he became a social worker.
shareDid you guys happen to read the book? The book and movie are pretty true to one another but the book touches on the relationship between Thackarey and the female teacher Gillian
To answer your question, it was sort of one of those endings that leads you to draw your own conclusions, but pretty much told us he decided to stay a teacher.

That's one of the best endings to a movie. Making up his mind just like that to tear up that engineering offer he's been waiting for and stay at North Quay to work miracles. Love how the music starts as he rips. Of course the song was a big hit. Love how at the graduation party he says after receiving the gift. "Well I think I better go and put it away."
shareAnd after her rips up the letter, he puts a flower in his lapel and goes back to the party! Nice touch!
shareHe taught in the school for 3 decades until he got compulsory retirement in 1996 and he kept on teaching in vicious school in Chicago, United States in 1996's "To Sir, with Love II"
