I just saw the sepia-toned version on DVD and I have to say I much prefer the regular colored version. It was an interesting experiment but I wish Huston had just used this minimally. It would have been nice if both versions were on the DVD.

shareI saw it on TCM in full color a few years back. The sepia color version was not available for many years and was even thought to be lost. When it was rediscovered, TCM started showing it and the DVD was released in sepia. I had this on VHS years ago in full color. I don't like the sepia version. Just because it was John Huston's original vision, doesn't mean it was a good choice. Huston was known for being quite eccentric.
shareI would not have liked this silly, boring, and pretentious picture in any case, but considering the mood and the period setting, it would have been better served in plain, old black and white.

I too prefer the regular version, it's been released in blu ray by Warner France, unfortunately they did not bother with restoring the original negative which is somewhat faded and full of scratches.
