was this supposed to be in the 40s?

it sure doesn't look like it. i guess to people in the 60s the 40s was their 80s.

The novel was set in the early 50s. Hollywood didn't start to get recent period settings right until the 70s, with movies like "Chinatown" and "Murder on the Orient Express". Even the legendary "Bonnie and Clyde" is all wrong, fashion-wise.

Ever seen Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte? It was supposed to be in the 20s but the girls all had big teased hairdos. I guess none of the actresses wanted to have their beehives bobbed.

HARLOW takes place in the 1930s yet all the fashions are 60s and at one point in the movie, Carroll Baker as Jean Harlow dances and does The Twist!

No, the movie takes place in 1962. BUT they are stars from the 1930s, now long forgotten.

The book was written in 1941 !

The film tells of six central characters, their failures, obsessions and darkest desires. Set at a US Army post in the South in the 1930s,

I just saw RIAGE at the New Beverly Theatre and there was nothing about it that suggested 1948 (or any other year beside 1966-67, when it was made).

Inside Daisy Clover (came out in winter 1965-66) was supposed to be set in the 1930's, and it's whole aesthetic sense screams mid-1960's.

The Hollywood studios had lost their mojo for making good movies by this time, and they were getting sloppy as a result. I counted two boom shots in RIAGE (unthinkable in a John Huston movie).

I read someplace that in the book it was supposed to be set in 1938, but the movie was set in 1948

I think you can see a few old, 1948 cars being driven

Also, it is supposed to take place at a time where there wasn't a war going on, as everyone on the military base is bored. So it can't be 1966-67, when Vietnam was taking place. In 1938 and 48, America was not at war

Just looking at the ribbons they wear; most have the ribbons from the WWII Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal, but no Korean War medal ribbons, so 1948 would be about right.
