Where has this film been???

Certainly not on the CBS late movie! Never in my 40+ years on this planet have I known this film to exist until I noticed a DVD release notification recently and I had to check it out. I enjoyed this film alot! Great movie!

Is he dead??? Not only is he shot twice at point blank range in the opening but in the ferry sequence which follows, when he is being briefed by Yost, the Alcatrez tour guide narrative in the back ground clearly indicates the impossibility, or implausiblility, of anybody ever escaping the island alive.

I believe Marvin to be a decent actor, contrary to what some others believe, but I also feel he had a stage presence of toughness that goes way beyond the cartoonish qualities of a present day Willis or Schwarzenegger. Could you imagine Arnold or Bruce taking a heel in the face from Vivien Leigh or a some serious slapping from Dickenson.

This film used to show up on Turner Classic Movies occasionally, and now that a DVD is out more people can see it. Beware of edited versions on TV.

I don't think he is supposed to be dead in the film, although it's hard to believe he survived being shot and ending up in San Francisco Bay.

I agree that Marvin is (was) way tougher than today's alleged tough guys. Watch closely - he dosen't even flinch when Angie Dickinson slaps him repeatedly. Marvin would chew Bruce Willis up and spit him out. Too bad it never happened.

Yeah, I just caught it for the second time. I agree that it's hard to imagine anyone other than Marvin as Walker. Initially, I was thinking that Clint Eastwood could have handled it, but Marvin was more physically aggressive and he makes the role his own, much as Eastwood did with his famous violent characters. Indeed, that ability to create a sense of essence, without even seeming to "act," is the mark of a true screen icon.

I saw this a few times on local TV throughtout the years. It's been around.

I often think about other 60s stars who could've played Walker. Burt Lancaster and Steve McQueen come to mind. Maybe Robert Mitchum, too.

well, on Yahoo sometime ago I read the news, that each year there's some kind of a competition of swimming from Alcatraz. And this year it was done by a 7-year-old boy. So if a 7-year-old can, why Walker couldn't?
