My favorite interpretation - possible SPOILERS

Maybe spoilers ahead...
and perhaps this has already been discussed in another thread....

Yost/Fairfax is the Uber "Boss" who assists and uses Walker to mow down the criminals who loosely form an organization with its own hierarchy. As Brewster lies dying he identifies Yost as Fairfax...one of the men Walker is presumably after for revenge. However, Fairfax/Yost is smart enough to exploit Walker's need for revenge and uses him to track the rest of the gang. Yost/Fairfax's plan was probably to kill Walker as well as soon as the rest of the competition was mowed down. However, Yost/Fairfax miscalculated one detail about Walker. Yost assumed that Walker would be greedy enough for the money and tries to bait him with it several times. When Walker realizes that Yost and Fairfax are the same person, he realizes that he had been used and knows that he must protect himself from the new threat since he has now helped make Yost/Fairfax a very powerful figure in the absence of other competition.
I would be interested in what other viewers feel about this theory.

I think that is an excellent interpretation of the film. I think Walker also knew he was probably forever going to be hunted by Fairfax and his cold blooded assassin. But I wonder if he stayed long enough to get the money?

Thank you both for your posts. I have to admit I was a bit blown away by the whole thing, and it's nice to have that analysis.

As mentioned by the hired sniper/assassin, Walker is a pro -- no one in the 'organization' will ever get him.

So yes, I think he sticks around to get his money.

But then what? What will be the driving purpose of his life?

Even Brewster tried to give his life a higher purpose, by stating his motive for unraveling the organization's hierarchy must be more than a mere $93K, whereby Walker raises his brows and replies "No I just want my $93,000". What purpose will he have after obtaining his money, having been betrayed by those who should have cared for him and left bereft even of revenge motivation now?

This reminds me of the ending of The Graduate (also released in 1967), where Ben and Elaine are together on the bus and their euphoria fades as they contemplate the 'now what' of their lives together....
