at the beginning, in the prison after he is shot, who is the man in the tanktop who stands up in the hallway? (when they hold credits) is that meant to be lee marvin? i think so b/c they show him getting in the water and swimming, in that same tank top. but i am confused b/c in the shot right before he stands, one second before, he had on long sleeves, laying on the floor. so what's up with the tank top? huge continuity error? if it was meant to be "wow this man is so tough he stands up after being shot" then they lost that on me b/c i thought the man who stood was not lee marvin but somebody else.
then right after walker was swimming in the water a fast cut goes to lee marvin in a gray suit on the boat. W T F? was that supposed to be later, after he went a healed up somewhere? it was cut in a way that made it look like it was one second later.
on the boat, how did the cop know it was 93000? and what did he mean "i want something else?" what did he want?
right after the boat scene, what is the deal with lee marvin STOMPING down that hallway? (intercut with shots of the woman putting on makeup and stuff) was that meant to say that he had arrived at the airport and was 'coming to get even' ?
at the end, why did he hang in the shadows and refuse to come out? was he scared of the cop? i don't understand.
then after the cops walk off from the money, the camera cranes up and shows us a shot of alcatraz. so, that final shootout was not at alcatraz? W T F i thought the whole idea was to return to the original place for the final showdown. i thought caroll oconnor even said that.
and, what was the motivation for the wife to vetray him in the first place? no backstory for that was ever explained that i could see.

I haven't seen the film in a while, I'll have to go back and watch the opening.

Yes, it was supposed to be a good year later.

He wasn't a cop. He worked for the Organization that the money was taken from. He wanted Marvin to kill off everyone connected to the Organization so that he could take over.

Yes, you're correct. Great editing right?

Well, it depends on which theory you subscribe to. There's no definitive explanation. Some believe that Marvin in fact died on the island and everything we see was his dying dream of revenge. I like to believe that he finally dies once the Carroll O'Connor character is killed. His fading back into the shadows could represent his soul moving on. If you believe he survived the shooting at Alcatraz and plotted revenge on the Organization, he is most likely waiting in the shadows for Fairfax (the "Cop") to leave.

This scene led me to believe that everything was a dream. At the end of the film they were actually at Fort Point, a Civil War era fort across the bay from Alacatraz. Perhaps in his delirious state, Marvin mistakingly dreamed they were at Fort Point, not Alcatraz.

She explains in the film that she began to fall for Reese. With Marvin dead, she and Reese could take his chunk of the loot and run off together.

Its Marvin. He's made a bandage out of his dress shirt. It's wrapped around his waist. I assume he tossed the jacket for the swim.

Carol O'Conner says "The drop has changed, but the run is the same." I've always figured he meant that the location of the drop changed, but the money amount was the same.
Otherwise, I agree with Zach.

the commentary w/ soderbergh and boorman explains everything for you; i learned a lot from it.
it WAS alcatraz at the end. same interior where the hellicopter comes down. according to boorman, lee hangs back in the shadow because he realized that it's not about the money. whether he would go get it after they left (if indeed there was money in the package)the director didn't say.
