I can't believe none of you film gurus caught the plot similarities between "Point Blank" and the 1999 Mel Gibson opus "Payback." Both screenplays are based on hard boiled detective author Donald Westlake's novel "The Hunter." -Tic
Maybe it is belaboring the obvious, but amid all the other comparisons made in the comments on other threads for this film, nobody else bothered to point out this fact. Have you read any of the other threads?
i dunno about all the this bickering. If you guys were true Lee Marvin fans youd show up at the guys house, beat the door down, beat the other man sensless, steal his wife, steal his booze, and then round it all off by smokeing an unfiltered cigarette. But you should read the book that both films are based off of. Its by Richard Stark and its really capturing the hard edged noir sense. By the way, im in the Bastard Sons of Lee Marvin (BSOL). We dress up as our favorite Lee Marvin characters and March in the Doo-Da parade in Pasadina,CA every year. Its really fun. We get drunk, smoke cigars, and spread the word of Lee.
If you go to this link Donald Westlake AKA richard Stark wrote the book titled the Hunter which both of these movies are based on. Naturally they both veer from the story a bit. The main character is named "Parker" and there are other books in the series which deal with Parker and the Outfit, etc, etc. It's worth reading they are interesting novels but rather short.
i found point blank to have quite a bit in common with the limey by sodenbergh, style-wise. i have nothing worthwhile to say about payback, a superfluous movie in my opinion.
I love that bit where a naked John Vernon("Dean Wormer") gets his comeuppance and he falls to his death from an apartment complex! There's visible matte lines around his butt!
Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son!
Dead, naked, and bleeding is no way to go through life, son!
