Steal from the mob, payback said mob, to get back into said mob???

*Spoilers*

So Mal knows about a deal going down for the mob. So he chooses to rob them. He gets the mob money. He then proceeds to pay the money back to the mob he just stole from in order to buy back a position in the mob. The mob is totally cool with this and lets him back in.

Umm, WHAT!

Or, say Mal was already working for the mob, finds out about this deal and choses to rob them. Then has a change of heart and turns around and gives the money back. The mob is totally cool with this and lets him back in.

Umm, what!

Did I miss something (there were a couple minutes unwatchable on a scratched up DVD)?

The entire film is Walker's dream after he's fatally wounded in the prison cell. So logic regarding stuff like this doesn't apply.

In the source book, Parker (Walker in the film) is double crossed by Reese, who also doublcrossed the other participants in the robbery. Reese needed the money to pay back the outfit, and was allowed to live and return to the fold if he paid back double what he took, which he subsequently did.

In the book, the heist was a long ways from where the outfit was, and was not supposed to be easily connected to the money Reese paid back.
