English Accents

Has anyone noticed how bad guys always have English accents? Scar, Shere Khan, the little king in Shrek.

Madame Medusa
Percival McLeach
The guy from Atlantis

^ Those all have American accents and that's just off the top of my head.

Supermodels...spoiled stupid little stick figures mit poofy lips who sink only about zemselves.

What I meant is you rarely hear the English accent on a good guy.

reply

The vultures are good guys and they have English accents.

True, but they're Northern English accents, which in England are traditionally stereotyped as lower class or even 'simple-minded'.

Not all of them, one of them has a London (specifically Cockney) accent.

Again, low-class, therefore 'harmless' (or at worst, a sidekick rather than the main baddy).

Bagheera was always a bit different. In the book it's clear that he has a dark streak that even Shere Khan wouldn't mess with. I guess I should have specified 'upper-class, Queen's English' accents.

Capt. John Smith, Robin Hood, Taran, Merlin, Roger, and Pongo (101 Dalmatians) all sport British accents..

However in this very film Bagheera has an English accent, and is played by an English actor.

Medusa has an English accent! Listen carefully, it's definitely British not American!

reply

Scar, Jafar, Frollo (I think, if i remember right), Coachman from Pinocchio.

reply

Coachman/Stromboli voice actor was from Amsterdam, not England. He did sound English though, I will agree. The voice actor who played Jafar is also from Ohio. Tony Jay (voice of Frollo) is from London, England though.

I too have always wondered why Disney made the characters with English accents, but now I think I have it figured out. Indian accents would have been too awkward and silly to listen to.

...the king in Shrek did not have a British accent.

You must be an American. Perhaps that's the deal in American movies. Well, when they're not *RAVs :D

But if you watch Brit telly, you'll see LOTS of Americans as bad guys and the Brits as heroes.

A lot of the good guy/girl animals in this movie had English accents:
besides (as mentioned) Bagheera (Sebastian Cabot, then seen on TV as Mr.French on Family Affair)
the two wolves
the Beatles-esque vultures
Colonel Hathti and the elephants (Hahti was, well, use to use an apt word sounding like hois name, haghty, not a villian).

Amanda Bynes is hot and Lindsay Lohan is not.
