I hated how Shere Khan only appeared in the last third of the film! Why then!
OH, funny how BAloo is carefree acting around Mowgli, then he goes along with Bageerha to send Mowgli to the man village. Guess who Baloo then agress with BAgheera! I saw the movie a lot.
sad how Bagheera missed Shere Khan meeting Mowgli, I wonder how Bagheera reacted when Shere Khan found Mowgli (Its implied Baloo told him).
In the original storyboards that Bill Peet did for the The Jungle Book (back when Terry Gilkyson was writing all the songs, and the direction of the film was going in a much darker direction than the version we're used to now), the opening scene features Shere Khan attacking the man-village.
As for the final version we're used to seeing, and how late Shere Khan's appearance is, I've also wondered why they didn't introduce his character earlier on. However, looking at it now, I think part of the reason they did that was to build up suspense and fear about this character. All the characters keep talking about how awful Shere Khan is, and how he would kill Mowgli. As the story progresses, Mowgli becomes more and more vulnerable to Shere Khan, building up the suspense more and more: when we first see Shere Khan, he finds out about Mowgli. When Shere Khan encounters Kaa, he is getting closer to Mowgli, but he can hide. When Shere Khan finally meets Mowgli, there is nowhere to hide, and the confrontation must be dealt with. We also see the rage and violence that the tiger is capable of in this scene. I think holding off from unveiling Shere Khan onscreen is actually pretty brilliant.
BTYW RE: Bill Peet..his work on this could be a whole different thread. He and Walt argued more and more and he left out only to write and illustrate a much loved series of childrens's books...but both had the last laugh as Disney also became very successful with the Jungle Book (only Walt, having died in 1966, was not around to see it..dumb query: Bill Peet had to have resented arguing with Walt now that Walt died..)
