Fitzwilly on DVD

Back in the seventies you could depend on the second and third runcinemas in Aberdeen to re-run Fitzwilly every eight or nine months.

This was when there were seven or eight such cinemas in the town and they wouldn't being doing that unless there was a reasonable size audience for the movie.

Since then video then DVD has taken over the role of re-run cinemas and they have all closed down.

Problem is that the Fitzwilly tape never really came out in the uk apart from some mail order outlets.

Now copies of the tapes sell for 60 to 70 us dollars which again shows that there is a market for the movie

So now it is up to mirasch to issue it on dvd and the sooner the better.

I found a used VHS copy @ sweetmoviememories.com for $19.95 US. Will keep it until hopefully it comes out on DVD. One of my favorite movies.

I, too, wish they would release this on DVD. I have an old VHS tape of it, but the pan and scan aspect ratio is so awful that entire two-person scenes become completely about the furniture situated between them and people are left unseen in key scenes entirely. Oh, well. Always enjoyed this movie. Just watched it again the other night and noticed that the woman who played Norman Fell's secretary in Gimbel's is the same woman with bad eyesight on the witness stand in "My Cousin Vinnie" twenty some years later. Good for her! Don't give up that career, no matter what! Also, just also found out that the novel the movie is based on is "aka A Garden of Cucumbers." Other than "The Postman Always Rings Twice," I don't think I've ever seen a title that had less to do with the content than that.

I found the novel in a university library; it is v. different from the film. Uncle Buckmaster is a prominent character, and I remember the character of Juliet being nothing like she is in the film. I don't think her absent-minded professor father and his crotchety pal from the university press were in it at all.

Doesn't it seem as though just about every other movie ever made has come out on DVD -- but not this one? And why not? It is so charming! I've loved it since I was little, and I remember it always coming on the same local L.A. channel just before Christmas each year and watching it with my mom.

And every time I pop my cherished VHS tape in the player (kept around mainly for this purpose) I find myself falling for the beginning, with its widescreen view of the credits, and then am cruelly disappointed as the picture pops back to full screen for the action.

Is there a site somewhere like tvshowsondvd.com where people can register for updates about films coming out on DVD, and which are used by studio decision makers to determine what old movies to bring out in good (e.g., cleaned up, widescreen) DVD editions? Because I'd not only buy a copy for myself, I would give it as gifts!

I tried the link to the online showing but that wouldn't work and now I've found out that the film it showed wit "Texas Across the Rive has been out on DVD for few years and is even Region Free which means I can play it where-ever I'm at. here (Home), the middle east (work), or the far east (wife's family). Yes we're a global family which is more than the entertainment industry is.

Come on MGM Fitzwilly is overdue for release.

I keep hoping they will release this with Dick Van Dyke commentary. I have written to D.V.D and asked. If I hear anything I will let you know.

It's out on DVD. It's one of those by request things. Problem is that it is a very low rent version. Not even a Play Movie button to click on. It just starts as soon as you put the DVD in. And when it is over, it immediately goes back and starts playing again. I didn't realize this and only got it stopped and ejected after the titles started running, so I don't know if it will start at the beginning if I play it again. Very annoying, but I guess better than nothing, since this is not a movie that anyone would give royal treatment to, too minor, I guess. I like the movie, it's fun and cute, very 60s. Wish they would have had more respect for it.

If you live outside the USA, yes. The disc is being released by MGM's version of the Warner Archive, which makes movies and TV shows like this with a small audience base available on DVD that are burned with a laser as opposed to being pressed (called MOD, or Manufacture On Demand) which frees the companies in question from having to make tons of pressed discs of a movie or TV show that won't be as popular as a TV show or movie that is, and losing money when the discs don't have a lot of buyers. MGM's website can not sell the discs outside of the USA, and neither can Warner Archive do so for obvious reasons.

If you live in the USA, you will be able to buy it from MGM's website.
