I totally agree, I love that little green bald vampire that the MGM lion turns into! Very unexpected the 1st time you see it and both funny and creepy which sets the perfect tone and mood for the rest of the film. It's too bad Hollywood has taken all the mood and creepiness out of the vampire genre these days with crap movies like Underworld, Twilight, Daybreakers etc... it's like they don't understand what vampires are supposed to be at all, nothing spooky about these new films which are more like sci fi action or something. Knowing the fate of Sharon Tate and the tragically doomed romance/marriage between her and Polanski does add a wierd almost perverse edge to the movie. Possibly the best vampire film ever made in my opinion.
I can't agree this is the BEST vampire movie ever made, though I love it and have viewed it many times and will again, but it's one of the best in terms of atmosphere (of the Gothic decay type), however it's a little confused about how vampires are supposed to live. There seems to be a number of very old vampires in this castle, yet they don't seem bothered by the general lack of victims to go around, nor do they seem willing to leave the castle or its grounds, and why would they want to dance? This movie is more a creepy/funny dream thing -- with somekind of vampires.
