The Remake (Casting)

It is no shock to anyone that someone in Hollywood had the idea to remake this classic American War Movie. We all know that someone will have another great idea and try to cast it with people from The O.C. or Entourage. Hollywood is in the fashion (in recent years) of trying to make pretty boys into tough guys. And it always some bs bad boy image. The Dirty Dozen is a movie about mean, ugly, rough, shady, anti-social Amry convicts. The scum of the humanity, these guys did not grow up in the burbs, they grew up in the worse area's in America. This film can not have someone like Brad Pitt or Ashton Kutcher, it's called THE DIRTY DOZEN, not PRETTY BOY HOLIDAY.

If this film will be made here is a little food for thought, keep in mind these are the actors that come to mind because of their acting skills and I think they would do it justice.

Major Reisman...........Tom Selleck
My reasoning for Tom Selleck? Besides being able to play military leaders. His stone cold eye's and his rough look make him perfect. Can you see him grabbing Maggott by the neck and saying, "You do as I say or i'll blow your brains out, yeah got me?"

Archer Maggott..........Chris Cooper
He is a very cool psychotic way about him that makes him perfect for this role, a bible screaming mad man from the south.

Victor Franko...........Michael Imperioli
Sopranos made him a great gangster, it is not to hard to see him as a buck private waiting to get hung for knocking over a store.

Robert Jefferson........Ving Rhames
Hard as nails, nothing more to say.

Samson Posey............Tyler Mane
Big mean and dumb.

Joseph Wladislaw........Christopher Meloni
I could see him as someone that has no love for officers.

That is the best I can come up with.

Like Most of you, I am getting tired of remakes. Writers are getting lazy or Hollywood does not want to take a chance on something orignal.

I agree either remakes or movies inspired by TV shows (the upcoming CHiPs?)

Casting how about...

Bruce Willis as Reismann, Mark Wahlberg as Wladisaw, Kiefer Sutherland as Pinkley, Gary Oldman as Franko, Steve Austin as Posey, Ving Rhames as Jefferson (totally agree), Jason Wiles as Sgt. Bowren and Edward Norton as Maggott

It would be great to have Mickey Rourke in it. Don't care which part. He's definitely NOT a pretty boy. Even so, remaking this movie and a bunch of other classics is not a good idea.

Ed Harris would be a good Major Reisman. No one can replace Lee Marvin IMO. Oohh what about R Lee Ermey. He would be awesome too!

<<It would be great to have Mickey Rourke in it. Don't care which part.>>

As Franco. Except he's a little old.

Is that the latest fashion?
No, Mom, that's the oldest profession.

reply

Ed harris should be Major Reisman

I think some of the actors in Carnivale could be good in a remake -- Clancy Brown, Robert Knepper, Tim Dekay, and Varlyn Stroud.

reply

man my dad is so sad about this. First underdog and now the dirty dozen. I'll see it though. I just hope that rumor about the casablanca rumor is untrue

reply

to quote Moe from the simpsons... "WHAAAAAAT?!"

A casablanca remake?!

...Not to burst anybody's "bubble" or anything, but Casablanca has been remade a few times already.

If you're going to remake it follow the book more closely and make it an HBO mini-series. In the book Reisman was like 30. Tom Jane, Scott Speedman, the Dude who played Leonidas in 300, Ed Burns or somebody like that would make a good Reisman. I'd have to think about the rest.

reply

Posey's a tough cast. Maybe some steroid case wrestler.

I may have been bifurcated, but I still have feelings.

reply

The remake is impossible nobody can replace Charles Bronson.

-You brought two too many

reply

An HBO Mini-series, now that would work. I never got a chance to read the book but I like that idea over a hollywood movie. HBO's movies have always been good and their mini-series are the just as well done. Personally, I would rather see actors like Ed Harries or Tom Selleck b/c they are old enough to play proper front line officer's and they have that "Rather smack you than say hello" look.

A pretty interesting list of suggestions:

Tom Selleck
Chris Cooper
Michael Imperioli
Ving Rhames
Tyler Mane
Christopher Meloni
Bruce Willis
Mark Wahlberg
Kiefer Sutherland
Gary Oldman
Steve Austin
Jason Wiles
Edward Norton
Mickey Rourke
Ed Harris
R Lee Ermey
Tom Jane
Scott Speedman

but as was pointed out, age is a critical if all-too often overlooked factor when war movies are cast...sad fact is, the vast majority of frontline soldiers (let's not forget, the 'Dirty Dozen' were frontline soldiers serving time in prison in England because they committed their crimes during the allied build-up to D-Day and most of them more than likely would've been in a 18 to 24 year old age group) are young men (and now women) who if they're 25 or older are considered as 'old men' or 'grandpas' by their peers...so with the exception of Reisman, who (in the book, anyway) was already a serving soldier & mercenary well-prior to the US involvement in WWII, and possibly Bowren, I think the 'Dozen' should be portrayed by actors who at least can appear to fit into the age demographic I've already cited.
Make no mistake, my very first thought for casting Reisman was Bruce Willis or Christopher Meloni, both of whom I think could do the role quite fine, thank you very much...Jane, Speedman, Norton & Wahlberg are all also great suggestions for playing members of the 'Dozen'...for the longest time (I've felt that this film should've been remade years ago) I woul've loved to see Steve Buscemi do the Franko part.
Seeing as physical fitness would also seem to be a prerequisite in this proposed remake, Steve Austin as Bowren would might work out pretty well and maybe Duane 'The Rock' Johnson as Jefferson. If the studio decided to go with only 2 or 3 'name' or 'marquee' actors and the rest relative unknowns with good acting skills, that wouldn't be too bad either, I wouldn't think.

reply

Reisman: Ed Harris is too old for the role and in any case I want a more charismatic actor. I think Ed Burns.

The MP Sergeant: In the original there was no reason why the MP sergeant would go on a suicide mission. How about if we re-write the scrift to fix that? I think Clancy Brown could reprise his sadistic warden role from the Shawshank redemption...he beats a prisoner to death and is offered a chance to redeem hismself?

Jefferson: I think The Rock would be great in this role. Everyone loves him, everyone will cry when he's inevitably cut down in a hail of lead.

Posey: Clint Walker has an awesome physique...Michael Clarke Duncan matches or even surpasses...an interesting racial twist here. Duncan was convicted for killing a 2 or 3 white airborne soldiers in a bar fight who'd pulled knives.
Adds an intesting touch of spice when he appears at Breed's airborne training school.

Breed: Needs an old school, 50 something, white arrogant actor. Neil McDonough?
(the bad guy in Walking Tall for those who don't know him). Or maybe Sam Shepherd, I liked him in Black Hawk Down (though he's a little old now).

Maggott: Something about Telly Savalas' shaven head fixes in my mind - got to be Vin Diesel.

Wladislaw: Karl Urban has that Eastern European look.

Franco: I can't think of any really cool Italian-American actors - I guess some unknown has to be cast.

Others:
Ron Eldard (loved his nilistic performance in When Trumpets Fade.
Tom Sizemore: Could be good in Ernst Borgdine's role as the general?
Jake Gyllenhaal: Pinkley?

reply

Major Reisman.....Ed Harris

reply

How about we just leave the original movie be and not remake it all, period!

reply

My dad, my brother and I talk about this all the time---- but once we get to Pinkley we can't think of anyone who could do it anywhere as well Donald Sutherland: I mean I can't see anybody doing a better job of Pinkley being a general (and that scene near the beginning when he's hammering in a nail and his head gets gradually closer and closer to the hammer and his whole body is moving with his arm to hammer in that nail.... Golden.) There is no one in Hollywood right now who could be that funny without looking like a funny person. Donald Suherland didn't look like he was going to be funny--- he just was.

If this movie was ever re-made, there is no way in heck I would go see it.

Sometimes, I guess, just aren't enough rocks.

Anyone who says the likes of Bruce Willis or Val Kilmer should be in a remake of The Dirty Dozen should be drawn and quartered.

reply

The only person I could see for Maggott (and only cause he plays a similar role) is Locke from Lost. Anyone else see that?

If they did it like th book that would be no problem. But some actors are just a wee bit too old for the roles except possibly the generals. There I could see having the older ones play a role. I like Meloni possibly as Reisman, but think Tom Jane, or some others would be good. I like The Rock as jefferson. Just remember if it was made like the book as a mini-series it would be different than the movie.

reply

I believe Keifer Sutherland should play Pinkley, as his father portrayed him in the original. That is a lock.

However, the rest of the cast is really hard to pick. You have to really watch the film a few times straight to figure it all out.

that's pretty cool. gotta get gary busey involved too.
