Ah, when Hollywood's tough guys were REAL LIFE tough guys...

Since half the cast (Bronson, Marvin, Walker, Borgnine, Kennedy, etc) were actual war veterans (most served in WWII).

There's just this something about their faces and how they carry themselves that CANNOT be faked by a De Niro or Pacino or Stallone.

Savales was also a veteran of WWII and had been wounded. Ryan also served in WWII. I think it is reasonable to assume that their life experience, in this case their war experience, aided them in their roles in the movie.
