Question about Franko- Contains Spoilers ***

I have watched the movie and read the book on which the film was based many times. But it is a long time since I watched the complete film.

In the book, Frank turns traitor in the battle, wanting to give himself up to the Germans, so he can spend the rest of the War unhurt in a POW camp. In the book he pulls a gun on Reisman to further his aim. Then Sergeant Bowren, riding in the same stolen German car as Franko and the Major, shoots and kills him.

My recollection is that in the film, Frank did not turn traitor, but was killed by the Germans in the battle. Is my recollection correct?

Here is Franko's story from the movie:

He is shot & killed in the last seconds of the escape from the Chateaux in the stolen German Halftrack; his last words were in effect, "WE DID IT! WE MADE IT! then he is struck & killed by one of the last shots fired by a German guard.

Why can't you wretched prey creatures understand that the Universe doesn't owe you anything!?

Thank you. Now I remember. In the movie, he was one of the heroes, or sort of. In fact, I doubt at that time the producers would have wanted to show one of the Dirty Dozen as a traitor.

They did though - Maggott. You could argue Sawyer and Lever abandoned their machine gun nest too early to try to escape when arguably they could have covered the half track to the edge of the estate and then the half track covered them making up the ground. Re Franko I think his character arc had made the only one of the Dozen who got any real development and went from evil to likeable hence why it would have been a shock for him to turn again at the end. Jefferson, Posey and Wladislaw were likeable but arguably sympathetic and never truly evil to start with.

Maggott wasn't a traitor. He was just a psycho.
In the novel I think Wladislaw is less likeable but also plays a more minor role. I preferred the film anyway.

Yes. Franco, Resiman, Wladislaw and Bowren are making their escape in the German half track and he gets shot by the Germans.

Unless Alpert's covered in bacon grease, I don't think Hugo can track anything.
