Would seeing it on DVD defeat its own purpose?

From what I've read when this was screened or when it screens on occasion it's up to the projectors which parts of the film to screen side by side with one another, so that no one has the same experience watching it in different screenings. So, the DVD version (the one that I think is non-regional as the same company released Vinyl/Velvet Underground and it played fine), is that just "a version", or what's the deal with it? Should I even bother trying to seek it out or just wait for the day when it screens (thankfully I'm right by Manhattan so it shouldn't be too much of a trip as MoMA owns it).

Great post doctor and you mention some interesting points.
Yes the theory was the projectionist would have the final decision of how the film was shown.
It's even more confusing since the film is 12 reels square format 16 mm.
33 minutes each give or take some seconds
In theory the projectionist could even show one reel at a time with it's own audio track and without the interference of the second reel with or without it's audio track playing at the same time. That would be a 6 hour 40 min viewing (not including title screens or credits.

When AW Films, Inc. began renting the film out in the late 60s, they provided a set order and projection instructions which have pretty much been followed since in publc screenings.

I'd love to see a Blu-Ray release which would allow the viewer to pick the order and soundtrack.

Any dvd release is just a nice dream.
From what I've read the Warhol Foundation
pov the film as 'high art' and not to be sold to the public as a product.
