Part of the reason The Prisoner is so unique is that it was the personal brainchild of its star. Another actor in the role would just be someone playing a part in a landscape created by another, and much of the unique effect would be lost. Does anyone recall the asinine reboot of a few years ago? Any reason to think that another attempt at it would fare any better?

Patrick was offered the original James Bond role, so if he took that and did not make the Prisoner, poetic justice would give it Sean Connery
shareIndeed. There’s no point in thinking about a replacement. Keep in mind that The Prisoner was essentially a continuation of the previous series in which McGoohan had starred, Danger Man (titled Secret Agent Man in the US). It was this continuity between the flat-out spy series and The Prisoner that gave The Prisoner so much verisimilitude with viewers when it first aired. In other words, if you are going to replace him with someone else in this, you have to replace him with the same guy in Danger Man.
