Ironside's sayings and more.

I love that this show is finally on DVD. I haven't seen it in so long, I don't remember any of the episodes at all. I was a little kid, for one thing.

I notice after watching 3 episodes so far, his favorite words are 'Flamin' and 'Query'. It's funny to me how the writers used Flamin' as a substitute for a 'dirty' word. Ironside comes off as an old curmudgeon. I guess Raymond Burr wanted a complete change in character after the long-running Perry Mason series.

Query: How many people in Hollywood knew he was Gay in his private life?
Answer: Many, but it was kept a 'secret'.

It's amazing at how many actors were/are Gay or Bisexual in Hollywood.
Private life is still mostly private.
Raymond Burr was one of the greatest actors on TV.
Rest In Peace.

Come out, Come Out, wherever you are!

Thanks for putting Ironside on DVD.

I enjoyed this DVD- I had watched the series in syndication from season 3 onward but I like the first year. The show actually remained quite consistent quality-wise throughout which for an 8 year long series is pretty remarkable. The only thing I don't like about the later seasons was that Mark had an awfully dated look- huge fro, bell bottom slacks in loud colors and patterns, bow ties and huge collared shirts, platform shoes and a big moustache- he was much better looking in the first season when he had a simple look. All that 70s paraphenalia was just too much- it distracted from the character and Don Mitchell's acting. His fro gets wider in each season.

This show is not that far removed from Perry Mason though- the majority of the plots are a variation on the "whodunnit" format.

As for his sexuality, it seems that the ration of gays in Hollywood is much higher than in the rest of the US for whatever reason. I don't recall this ever being a topic in this series though it was in a few other dramas during its run- NYPD, Medical Center and a few others.
